Excellent commentary, as usual. Some comments:

In Snowden's initial attempt to communicate with Poitras. who lacked crypto skills, other unidentified parties were asked to provide assistance. Various identities have been rumored. What files were shared with these parties for decryption is unknown. Further, there were reports Snowden approached several unidentified parties (besides Gellman) for discussions before coming to an agreement with Poitras. Not clear if files were shared in these exchanges and if those were part of the Poitras sharing. Another unanswered question is what files Poitras initially shared with Greenwald on the Hong Kong jaunt and their relation to the Snowden batch handed over in Hong Kong. Nothing has be published that confirms the Hong Kong handover batch is all that was handed over before or after. Snowden was dubious about the Hong Kong visitors' trustworthiness, in particular Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill. Caution could have led him to stash other batches elsewhere for protection.

Wild card speculation: Greenwald has stated he would like to publish more of the Snowden material, maybe with Poitras, due to The Intercept's shutdown of releases. He might do that in connection with his career move to Substack and possible new media forum.
