Overview

The Ford Transit wears a few different hats—both figuratively and literally. Not only does it offer three roof heights, but this full-size van can be configured to carry things, people, or a mix of both. Beyond that, shoppers must decide between a naturally aspirated and a twin-turbocharged V-6, rear- and all-wheel drive, three wheelbases, and multiple weight ratings.

Ford also offers an array of driver-assistance and convenience features to create the perfect workhorse and/or people mover. That versatility helps to push the Transit ahead of its rivals, which include the relatively pricey Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and the front-drive-only Ram ProMaster.

Expert Tip: Ford also makes an electric version of this van called the E-Transit. Apart from the driver and front-seat passenger, it carries only cargo and can go an estimated 159 miles between charges (presumably when unladen).

What's New for 2026?

The Transit receives some updates for 2026, including new standard equipment. The larger 12.0-inch infotainment display is now standard, and with it comes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8.0-inch digital gauge display is also available. Ford has also revamped the Transit's fleet management telematics tools they call Ford Pro. All models now get the Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assistance features, and buyers can upgrade to Co-Pilot360 2.0 on some models, which unlocks more advanced tech such as an adaptive cruise control system with a lane-centering feature. There's a new look for the van's exterior badging this year, as well as some updated taillights.

C/D Expert TipC/D Expert Tip:

If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The list of standard equipment also includes amenities such as Bluetooth connectivity, dual USB ports, and air conditioning. We'd add the Co-Pilot360 2.0 package to get blind-spot monitoring for safer lane changes.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

  • Engines: 275-hp 3.5-liter V-6, 310-hp twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6
  • Transmission: 10-speed automatic
  • Drivetrains: rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive

The Transit is available with a choice of two powertrains and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 makes 275 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, while the EcoBoost twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 is rated for 310 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Both come with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

We like the Transit’s compliant-for-a-van suspension tune, which also manages to provide decent handling. These qualities go a long way toward keeping the occupants feeling fresh over longer slogs.

Car value calculator

What's Your Car Worth?

Car and Driver calculates your car's value in three free and easy steps - using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.

0–60-MPH Times

  • C/D 60-mph Test: 6.7 seconds (3.5T AWD)

In Comparison: The last Transit we tested posted a 6.7-second run to 60 mph. That's impressive acceleration for a full-size van and much quicker than the Ram Promaster's 8.1-second time.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Transit can tow up to 6900 pounds, depending on how it’s configured. Its payload also varies, with some models topping out at 3,060 pounds while others offer up to 5,103 pounds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

  • C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Tests: 17 mpg (3.5T RWD), 16 mpg (3.5T AWD)

Full-size vans such as the Transit are exempt from federal fuel-economy standards, so there are no EPA ratings to reference. These big boxes are, by nature, aerodynamically challenged and generally on the heavy side, characteristics that make for less-than-ideal fuel-economy numbers.

An all-wheel-drive 2020 Transit with the twin-turbo V-6 returned only 13 mpg combined in our hands, although it did manage 16 mpg in our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test. A rear-wheel-drive model with the same engine did slightly better in our highway test, seeing 17 mpg.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: The Transit's cabin takes its design cue from the Ford Explorer but features van-specific details, such as prominent cupholders at each end of the dashboard. The seating is comfortable, the ride is smooth, and interior noise levels are kept to a minimum—for a work van. Shoppers can also delete the front passenger seat in certain models, leaving only a driver’s seat.

Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Rows: Some Transit passenger vans can seat up to 15 people across five rows, with two people up front; three seats in the second, third, and fourth rows; and a four-person bench in the wayback. Said configuration is optional on Long models and standard on Extended ones.

Cargo Capacity: Shoppers have lots of decisions to make when ordering a Transit, including selecting its wheelbase length, roof height, seat count, and payload rating—all of which impact how much stuff fits inside. To give you an idea of just how cavernous this van is, consider this: A Chrysler Pacifica has about 141 cubic feet of cargo capacity with both of its rear rows folded into the floor; the smallest Transit cargo van has twice that amount of space (and the largest, almost quadruple).

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Infotainment: 12.0-inch touchscreen (standard)
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
  • Audio Systems: 4-speaker stereo (standard), 6-speaker stereo (optional), 8-speaker stereo (optional)

All Transits come with a 12.0-inch infotainment screen that runs Ford's Sync 4 software. A four-speaker sound system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth phone and music streaming, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are all standard. The options list includes SiriusXM satellite radio and either a 6- or 8-speaker stereo.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Ford Transit offers a fair number of driver-assistance features that can help prevent collisions.

  • Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning
  • Optional Safety Features: adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature, blind-spot monitoring, a 360-degree camera system

For information about the Transit’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Ford protects the Transit with warranty coverage that’s typical for the segment and offers no complimentary service or maintenance agreement. The Chevrolet Express and the GMC Savana both come with one free service visit when purchased new.

  • Limited Warranty: three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: five years or 60,000 miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance: none
