Citronella Dog Collars

Citronella dog collars from eDog Australia can control nuisance barking and other behavioural issues through the natural power of citrus. Citronella is incredibly effective at controlling dogs when they are misbehaving. Although the spray is harmless, dogs dislike the smell. It interrupts their thought process and makes them behave more appropriately.

When you're looking for a citronella dog collar, there are two main types – the bark collar and the training collar. The training collar is operated by a remote, and it can be used at any time with an effective range of 150 metres. The training collar is ideal if your dog exhibits unwanted behaviours such as digging, barking at visitors, chasing animals, and many others.

If your dog tends to bark while you're not at home, then a barking citronella dog collar is an excellent choice. These correction collars detect barking via a microphone sensor and release a citronella spray to deter excessive barking. When barking is detected, the collar will expel a spray of citronella. In most instances, nuisance dog barking is due to boredom. Correcting excessive barking with citronella is a highly effective method for controlling this undesirable behaviour.

Using citronella has been used as a technique for modifying dog behaviour for many years. You may have even seen gardeners using orange and other citrus peel in the gardens to keep dogs away. While this is not as effective as using a remote-controlled citronella training collar, it does demonstrate how dogs simply hate the smell and will do their best to avoid it.

How effective are citronella dog collars?

A citronella dog collar is incredibly effective as a training tool for most dogs. Using a citronella spray does not harm the dog, but instead deters them with an unpleasant smell. These collars are a safe and effective way of disciplining your dog.

When used appropriately, a citronella collar is an effective way of altering your dog's behaviour. With time, your dog will associate poor behaviour with getting sprayed with citronella, which will deter them from doing it again. Provided the collar is installed on your dog correctly, the spray chamber is filled, and the batteries are working, the collar will work as intended.

A citronella collar will work for the majority of dogs. However, some very stubborn barkers can bark so incessantly that the collar runs out of citronella spray. If your dog is very intelligent, they may work out other ways to avoid getting sprayed, such as rubbing the collar to the side. In these cases, it may be best to upgrade to a static shock electric collar.

It is possible to increase the effectiveness of the citronella collar by also using positive reinforcement. For example, if someone is knocking at the door and your dog is barking, the citronella collar will go off, which stops the nuisance barking. But your dog may still appear overexcited; in that instance, train them to sit, and you can provide a treat when they are calm. In this scenario, the collar has performed the first correction, and then you'll provide the second. With time, your dog will understand not to bark when the doorbell rings, and instead, they'll sit and wait for their treat.

What are the benefits of using a citronella dog collar?

The primary benefit of using a citronella dog collar is the speed at which it can modify behaviour. The barking collar is ideal for times when you are not present (e.g., during work hours), and the remote collar is suitable for controlling other problems (digging, chasing livestock, etc.). The barking collar is automatic, and the remote requires your input. The collars should only be used while your dog is doing the activity you wish to correct. If you try to correct the dog after the act, the dog will not associate the two experiences. You may inadvertently end up correcting a desired behaviour (e.g., if the dog has stopped barking and is now sitting calmly).

While shock collars for dogs are very safe and do not harm your pet, many people think that a citronella collar is a more dog-friendly option. Both of these types of collars are extensively tested on pets to make sure they are not harmed in any way. The citronella spray is reasonably pleasant to humans, but to your dog's sensitive nose, the experience is intense and unpleasant.
