On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the strength, resilience, and enduring cultures of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities, and the leaders who have carried those traditions forward for generations. We also recognize that American Indian and Alaska Native people experience the highest suicide rates of any racial or ethnic group in the United States, a disparity shaped by historical trauma and ongoing inequities in access to care. Research shows that cultural connectedness, community, and tradition are powerful protective factors, and that prevention works best when it is led by and grounded in the communities it serves.
