Environmental exposure is one of the biggest factors impacting a charger's uptime in the field. Different geographies put chargers under very different stress profiles, for example: → Cold and coastal: constant rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and salt-laden air. → Hot and humid: sustained heat, moisture, and storms that drive rain sideways. Designing for all possible conditions is about understanding where our customers operate, designing out common failure modes, and validating beyond what the standards require. Environmental wear, in any climate, shows up as lost revenue over the lifetime of the charger, long before it shows up as a warranty claim. Watch as our Reliability Engineer Silvestro Bruno opens up the A400, our flagship All-in-One charger, to show how we tackle one of the most common failure modes – water ingress – with design and testing choices that keep water out, layer by layer. #Durability #EVCharging #Reliability

Space reserved for charger maintenance is space that cannot be used for charging bays or parking. The A400 addresses this with maintenance access through its side doors – removing the need for a rear service corridor and giving site designers more flexibility. Installed against a wall, back-to-back with another unit, or alongside a curb, the #A400 helps operators make better use of the available footprint while retaining access for servicing. This practical design choice helps put more of the site to work, and allows the site layout to be shaped around the needs of drivers and operators, not the technicians. Building charging infrastructure that holds up across the Middle East. EV sales across the wider Middle East grew by around 50 percent in 2025. In a region electrifying this fast, the harder question is not demand or capital, but whether the infrastructure keeps working under all-day fleet utilization, on sites bigger than the grid can serve at peak, and in one of the world's toughest operating climates. In the last twelve months, ABB E-mobility chargers across the region delivered 79.6 GWh through more than one million charging sessions. Five projects show what that takes in practice: → Abu Dhabi: 51 Terra 360 chargers installed in seven days. → Dubai: more than 4.3 MW across 24 charge points for a taxi fleet. → Kuwait: operation through summers above 50 °C. → Qatar: a 35.6 MW bus depot kept within its grid limits by software. → Saudi Arabia: 131 chargers operating today, ahead of EVIQ's 5,000-point corridor target for 2030. The common thread is reliable hardware, software that manages grid limits, and a local service structure that keeps both running. Three things European CPOs need to consider before AFIR's January 2027 deadline. From January 1st, 2027, Europe's public DC chargers of 50 kW and above on the TEN-T network and secure parking areas must have payment terminals. Based on conversations we've had with policymakers and customers to understand the practical implications of this, we have identified three key areas that CPOs in Europe should now be considering: 1. Compliance does not have to be complex→ Depending on equipment and site configuration, most payment functionality can be added through a retrofit. 2. Compliance can support business growth→ Drivers expect charging to be as intuitive as any other retail transaction. 3. Now is the time to act→ Assessments, procurement and commissioning all take planning, and demand for compliant solutions will likely rise as the deadline nears. Two obvious [for designers] but deceptively simple questions [for our industry] shaped our work from day one: Who are we designing EV charging for, and What do they need? For Design News, I share how pursuing the answers took us to some unexpected places. We studied Schiphol Airport’s wayfinding to learn how to deliver the right information at the right moment; Antony Gormley’s sculptures informed presence and posture at human scale; Zurich’s street furniture showed us the empathy that simple, permanent forms can create. And the airplane galley, a mature design system where a handful of components create extraordinary flexibility, became the organizing principle for the entire portfolio. What the team has delivered on that foundation speaks for itself. One shared architecture and design language across the family. Standardized components that let technicians complete repairs up to six times faster. Red Dot Design Awards for the A400 and C50, and iF Gold for the A400. But the awards aren’t the point, its that design in this industry is a business tool, a growth driver, and increasingly a competitive advantage. Our team at ABB E-mobility proves it every day. Passing certifications doesn't tell how a charger will age. Standards set the minimum a charger must meet to be deployed. However, they don't necessarily account for everything it goes through over the next decade. For a charging operator, this gap is where the unexpected costs build: units that cleared certification can start failing in year two, risking downtime and lost revenue. Take a component that meets its standard. Put it in coastal salt, alpine cold, or constant humidity, and it can still fail after eighteen months, because the standard never simulated those conditions. Similarly, a charger that checks standards as a stand-alone solution can fail once it's running inside a larger network. So the question for any operator is: how do I know a unit will last its full lifetime before it's even installed? Andrea Bianchi, Principal Design Engineer at ABB E-mobility, explains how we answer this question. Each component goes through more than 500,000 hours of accumulated testing, all of it run in-house at our manufacturing and testing facility in Valdarno, Italy. We test for environment and real usage, not just the standard, so a charger is proven to perform for up to 10 years in the field. Certification gets a charger approved but testing at this level is what tells an operator how long it will keep earning. #EVCharging #ChargerReliability #Engineering

Next Thursday: what keeps public transit chargers online when something breaks – webinar with Utah Transit Authority. For a transit agency, uptime depends on two agreements working together. The hardware warranty defines what gets repaired. The service level agreement (SLA) defines how quickly your partner responds and what uptime they’re accountable for. If it’s unclear where one ends and the other begins, a single charger fault can mean buses that don’t charge overnight, trips pulled from the morning schedule, and repair costs your agency ends up absorbing. Join us and UTA as we talk through the role SLAs play in keeping charging infrastructure running reliably. 📅 Thursday, October 22 | 10:15–11:00am EDT | 4:15–5:00pm CEST 🔗 Register here: https://bit.ly/3VCTtkt Can’t make it live? Usability has a direct effect on how many charging sessions succeed, and with that, the lifetime economics of a site. A charger with 99% uptime that one in five drivers struggles to use is losing a fifth of its business in practice. Rain on the screen, direct sunlight, low light, and drivers wearing winter gloves are everyday conditions we design our chargers against from the start. When an interface gets in the way of charging successfully, the cost shows up quickly, whether that's fewer repeat visits at retail sites, lower utilization on highway corridors, or vehicles leaving fleet depots undercharged. As Lorenzo Burchi, Hardware Design Engineer at ABB E-mobility, puts it; if a driver can't interact with a charger, the charger is effectively down. In this video, he shows how we've designed our charger interfaces for usability in every scenario. #EVCharging #UserExperience #Uptime

Heavy-duty electric transport needs standards that make megawatt charging safe, reliable, and ready to scale. For decades, ABB E-mobility has contributed to the development of EV charging standards, from early CHAdeMO deployments and CCS development to helping advance MCS and IEC standards today. By combining real-world charging experience with standards leadership, we're helping support the next generation of charging infrastructure. In a Q&A with EV Engineering Online, two senior engineers from the ABB E-mobility team, Stefan Raaijmakers and Miguel Rodríguez Escudé, share insights from their work on the development of MCS, including key considerations around safety, thermal management, communications, and testing as megawatt charging moves closer to large-scale deployment.
