Most first-time hardware founders see EVT, DVT, PVT as bureaucracy. But in fact they're the mechanism that keeps a bad decision from reaching 10,000 units. EVT - Engineering Validation Test. Does the design do what we said it would do? Expect failures. That's the point. DVT - Design Validation Test. Does it do that consistently, across units, across conditions? This is where tolerance stack-ups become real problems. PVT - Production Validation Test. Can the factory build it the way we designed it, at volume, with acceptable yield? Skipping or compressing these phases doesn't make you faster. It makes your problems more expensive. A failure caught at EVT costs you a prototype run. The same failure caught post-launch costs you a recall. The teams that ship on time aren't skipping validation. They're planning for it from the start. Reshoring is real, but it is not a simple switch. Moving manufacturing closer to the US market cuts certain risks: lead times, tariff exposure, IP proximity. It adds others: higher unit costs, thinner supplier ecosystems, and fewer engineers with volume production experience. For most consumer hardware programs, the 2025-2026 answer is a deliberate supply chain map: critical components sourced with redundancy, final assembly staged closer to market where the economics justify it. Executing that map takes relationships built over years. At AJProTech, we work with a vetted network of manufacturing and supply chain partners across North America, Asia, and Europe, giving clients real options: alternative suppliers, secondary assembly sites, and sourcing redundancy that holds up under production pressure. Companies doing this well started the analysis two years ago. The window for easy decisions has closed, but the right partner network makes the remaining ones faster to execute. If your supply chain strategy needs a second look, let's talk. 📩 Reach out through the link in bio or DM directly. #SupplyChain #HardwareManufacturing #USManufacturing #ProductDevelopment #AJProTech

AJProTech is being named a best product development partner for companies and startups by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and even Grok. Nobody payed for this and it is something we're proud of. That pride comes with a lot of responsibility. We get a high volume of requests right after an AI consultation, and that can be painful for both sides. Recent example. A device with heat inside the enclosure, a screen on the outside of it, and a battery. The founder asked us to quote one prototype. Two things were already wrong before we started. Mistake one. He thought the number of prototypes drives the cost. It doesn't. The engineering is identical whether you build a single unit or a batch, so extra units cost you parts and assembly time and almost nothing else. A single prototype is also the worst thing to own. They break. Someone drops one, a courier loses a box, a unit dies the night before a pitch. You need units in several places at once anyway: photography, investor meetings, hands-on testing, spares. Building one doesn't save you money. It books you a bad week. Mistake two, the bigger one. He put the complexity in the wrong half of the product. He assumed the electronics were the hard part. They're the easy part. A display module, a small processor, a battery, and USB-C charging all exist off the shelf, and he was right to plan on using them. The money goes into mechanical and thermal. You need a sealed window on a curved enclosure that still opens for service, holds a battery, survives splashes and daily wiping, and looks finished enough to film. A concept model gives you the shape. It doesn't seal, it doesn't assemble, and it doesn't move heat anywhere. Heat is what nobody plans for. Put something hot inside an enclosure and none of the electronics want to sit next to it. Displays wash out and lose life, boards drift out of spec, and lithium cells lose capacity and turn into a safety conversation long before they get near the temperature of a hot drink. So you need real thermal separation between the hot part and the electronics. Separation costs wall thickness. Wall thickness fights the slim silhouette in every render I get sent. Video on the screen pushes from the other side, since it pulls far more power than a static image, which grows the battery, which grows the wall again. That's the actual conversation: keeping heat, a screen, and a battery in one enclosure without any of the three ruining the other two. It's never about how many units you build. Longer version with the mechanical and thermal detail: https://lnkd.in/dxqrB-zF If an AI pointed you to us, good. I'll walk you through it. Just come in ready to hear that the hard part probably isn't where you think it is. #HardwareDevelopment #Prototyping #HardwareStartups

$19.99/month to unlock the thing you already bought. Somehow this became a standard playbook for smart devices. Published a new article on Forbes about #hardware subscriptions. A founder pitched me his device. Then the business model: "monthly subscription for the app." I asked what the subscription gives the user. Long pause. The app controlled the device. That's it. He wanted to charge rent on something the customer already bought. Go read one-star reviews of any subscription-gated product. Count how many times the word "hostage" shows up. My wife won't upgrade her sleep ring. New one wants a monthly fee for what her old one already does free. Staying on old hardware is her protest. The rule: the device delivers the promise that made someone buy it. The subscription delivers something beyond it. Full article on Forbes 🔗 https://lnkd.in/giyP484s At AJProTech - IoT Product Development this comes up before a single schematic exists. Most #hardware delays don't start in engineering. They start in the requirements doc you send before we begin. A client asked me last week: what do the well-run projects have in their spec on day one that the slow ones are missing? Best question I've gotten from a client in a while. Here's what I told him 👇 🔺 Cut it down to absolute must-haves. Every "nice to have" you leave in the doc adds months. Complexity compounds. Trying to solve everything in v1 is the most expensive decision you can make. 🔺 Analyze existing products first. Understand what works and what doesn't - for YOUR use case specifically, not in general. 🔺 Sourcing something existing is 12+ months faster than building custom. If you go custom, you need a very specific answer to one question: what is absolutely missing in what's already out there? No clear answer = don't build custom 🔺 It's a two-way street. We'll give feedback on your requirements. Manufacturers will give feedback on ours. Three parties shape the final product. Come in expecting collaboration, not defending a spec 🔺 Buffer. Financial AND calendar. Custom hardware comes with surprises. Every time. WHATEVER YOU THINK IT WILL TAKE, DOUBLE IT 🔺 Flexibility beats precision. Your spec is the North Star, not the contract. Most of the budget and timeline we save for clients comes from optimizations they were willing to accept mid-build. None of this is specific to one project. It's universal across everything we've built at AJProTech - IoT Product Development. This one will be our 106th =) What's the one thing you wish you'd known before writing your first hardware spec? #hardware #productdevelopment #IoT #consumerelectronics #startups #manufacturing

Not every proof of concept has to look like a proof of concept. We love building #hardware prototypes that are both functional and visually compelling. Sometimes a client needs a quick feasibility test, but “quick” doesn’t have to mean rough or uninspiring. This demo shows real-time person tracking using a mmWave radar, visualized on a small touchscreen with a live radar-style interface. The handheld prototype is battery-powered, held together with a bit of duct tape, and built to answer one simple question: Does the technology work? The answer was a clear yes. This prototype became the foundation for the project, giving the founder, investors, and the engineering team confidence that the chosen technical approach was the right one before investing in full product development. This isn’t our first project using mmWave radars. We’ve used this technology across multiple products where detecting and tracking people without cameras is the preferred solution. As privacy becomes increasingly important, sensing technologies that don’t rely on capturing images are becoming more valuable than ever. Another advantage is that these radars are remarkably affordable while requiring very little processing power, making them an excellent fit for many embedded products. Engineering is about reducing uncertainty. Sometimes that means building something impressive in a matter of hours or days to validate a big idea. #Engineering #Prototype #ProductDevelopment #EmbeddedSystems #IoT #Radar #MillimeterWave #Hardware #Innovation #AJProTech

Most consumer products have a very polished appearance because that's the first thing that people can see, but the iconic ones are also very attractive inside. Deep inside the #PCB, where no one can see with the naked eye. Apple, in the early days, was optimizing every single thing about the product, even the font on the board. Because engineers have extremely high standards of quality. That resonates well with me. We've recently been building a tiny consumer #electronics product with ultra-dense 10 layer PCB. Density is insane, 100% of board is packed with components Then our electrical engineer sent me this exploded view of the PCB. What struck me is was density inside the board. Have a look: this part is not just packed with traces on the outside. It literally has no space inside the layers. This is as close to perfection as it gets. Made my day. In January, the U.S. added a 25% import tax on certain high-end #AI chips (Phase 1 of the Section 232 semiconductor tariff). Most #hardware teams barely felt it, since broad carve-outs kept the hit narrow. Phase 2 changes the math. Commerce delivered its required review to the President July 1, and the expansion under discussion covers manufacturing equipment, memory chips, and, critically, derivative products. Not just the chip. The finished device it ships inside. Why this matters now: a product starting #development today reaches production in 12 to 24 months. Component choice, tariff classification, and manufacturing location get locked at the architecture stage. Changing them at #DVT costs multiples of what the same decision costs at concept. If a 2027 program is on your roadmap, the cheapest version of it starts engineering this quarter. How is your team pricing in tariff risk on programs that won't ship until this settles?
