Vanessa L Allen Sutherland JD/MBA says she finds herself increasingly embracing the “general” in “general counsel.” Sutherland, general counsel, corporate secretary and executive vice president of government affairs of Phillips 66, juggles numerous topics each day, from contracts to employment to intellectual property, she said in an interview with Bloomberg Law. This is all amid a broadening risk landscape that includes not only legislative and regulatory changes, but social media discourse, geopolitical threats, and supply chain logistics, she said. “I look at the risks that are the most time sensitive,” she said. “You need to be able to be comfortable in a lot of different topics at once.” Her logic is a fitting extension of her personality. Sutherland is everything you’d expect of a Fortune 50 general counsel — eloquent, astute, and laser-focused on enterprise success — with a few surprises thrown in. She’s a published poet with an interest in physics, and she toyed with going to graduate school for art history. Corporate law is a happy mix of all her interests, she said. “It was a great place for me to merge the science background, my artsy self with the analytical part of my brain,” Sutherland said. Platkin LLP has sued OpenAI and Microsoft three times since the firm opened its doors in February. Two of the cases accuse the companies of scraping hundreds of thousands of copyrighted articles to build generative AI products, while another alleges ChatGPT drove a Pennsylvania woman into a mental health crisis. “My focus has always been: Let’s bring big cases that have impact and address harms,” said Platkin, who took on tech companies and gunmakers as state attorney general. “And right now, the AI industry I think is causing more risk for humanity, by their own admission, than any industry on the planet.” Platkin’s five-lawyer firm joins a crowded field aiming cases at AI companies amid massive growth and escalating, existential concerns about threats posed by the technology.
