Updates

  • Last week, dfusion's Mia Barrett and B.A. Laris went to Ballou High School in Washington DC to play Fantasy Sports Math League with their Algebra 2 classes.

Fantasy Sports Math League Live! Students at Ballou Senior High School joined us for Draft Day last week during the Ed Games Expo as part of the mEducation Alliance Symposium. So much fun to get high school students drafting and scoring and setting line-ups on their FSML Fantasy Teams (and remembering how to solve fraction equaions!). Thanks Edward Metz and Anthony Bloome for all of the organizing!

  • We're proud to sponsor the 10th annual College Autism Summit, hosted by the College Autism Network, November 8 to 11 in Baltimore. Join BA Laris and Isabella Phan on Wednesday, November 11 at 10:00 am ET for "Applied Inclusion: Real Scenarios, Real Solutions for Supporting Autism at Work." Inclusion works best when it's practical. This session walks through realistic workplace situations, from team communication to feedback to everyday interactions, and shares concrete strategies that help autistic employees and their colleagues work well together. It draws on our work with SkillFlix, a library of short videos that model real communication and relationship skills in familiar settings. Thank you to CAN for ten years of connecting practitioners, researchers, employers, and self-advocates to improve outcomes for autistic students as they move from campus to career. See you in Baltimore! #CollegeAutismSummit #Autism #Neurodiversity #NeuroinclusiveWorkplace #CampusToCareer #SkillFlix

  • Through HEI Institute, Sequoia Healthcare District is disseminating SkillFlix for Autistic Young Adults -- for free -- to autistic young adults and those professionals who serve them (limited to those served in the regions covered by the Sequoia Healthcare District). SkillFlix is a dfusion flagship project and it pleases us to see partnerships like these expand access to this resource. Learn more about that partnership here. https://lnkd.in/gt_wt9jq

HEI was pleased to have a resource table this past weekend at the annual conference of the Autism Society of the San Francisco Bay Area, held in Foster City, CA. With a focus on "building connections," the conference hosted numerous engaging speakers and covered diverse topics of interest to autistic adults, their families, and the diverse practitioners who serve them. My colleague and I were happy to staff the HEI table showcasing the SkillFix for Autistic Young Adults resource, a 150+ short video library -- created with input and acting by autistic young adults -- that helps develop diverse relationship skills. The videos are neurodiversity affirming, cover real life/real situations, and were shown to improve confidence and well-being skills in a prior evaluation study. (This resource was developed and evaluated by dfusion; see dfusioninc.com). HEI was honored to receive a grant from the Sequoia Healthcare District to disseminate this resource -- for free -- to autistic young adults and those professionals who serve them (limited to those served in the regions covered by the Sequoia Healthcare District). If you would like more information, including a custom link to access this resource, feel free to contact me at diana.dullakers@heiinstitute.org.

  • For years, Izzy Schieber, PhD, worked with families whose children became more upset with every dental visit, sometimes to the point of needing physical or chemical restraint for a routine cleaning. Her dissertation focused on helping kids with IDD get through dental care without restraint and with less stress. Now she's helping build SkillFlix for Dental Professionals: short videos that teach dentists practical skills for making appointments go better for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Because when a visit goes badly, that's what kids and families remember next time. • Join the SocialWise Advisory Board SocialWise is a new AI-enhanced tool being built to help autistic young adults practice real-life communication and relationship skills — things like handling conflict, giving feedback, or navigating tricky social situations — in a low-pressure space. We're looking for autistic young adults (aged 18-28) to help shape it as it's built. Advisors will meet roughly once a month to weigh in on things like how the AI should behave, what feels authentic and affirming, and how to keep the tool safe and transparent. Early on, that might mean helping create sample scenarios; later, it means reviewing real interactions and flagging what's working (or isn't) as the tool is tested. It's a flexible, meaningful way to make sure SocialWise is actually built by and for the autistic community — and advisors receive a stipend at the end of the project. mEducation Alliance is inspiring us with so many ideas and excellent connections. We presented about the power of using sports to teach math. Dr. Gregory Washington, president of George Mason University, opened the day by talking about how "talent is universal but opportunity is not". Because opportunity is not universal, we at STEMPlay Labs developed two fantasy sports math league games that are analogue. The paper lesson plans for Basketball and Soccer allow students to play when they do math, even if their classroom is low-tech.
