Early results from an EPRI-led California Energy Commission-funded (CEC) demonstration are showing how a high-efficiency HVAC retrofit could help reduce cooling and natural gas reheat loads in healthcare facilities. EPRI is evaluating a 9,000-cfm high-efficiency dehumidification system (#HEDS) retrofit at an operating healthcare facility in coastal Southern California. Since operation began in September 2026, preliminary results include: ⚡𝟮𝟵% 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟳𝟲% 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹-𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 during unusually hot and humid conditions ⚡ 𝟰𝟮% 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟴𝟱% 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹-𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 during milder, more typical coastal conditions ⚡~𝟱𝟮% 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆, with temperature and dew-point control maintained during both periods The demonstration is also examining real-world implementation considerations, including commissioning, controls integration, air balance, and maintaining critical healthcare facility requirements. Results remain preliminary, with monitoring and independent verification planned through Q3 2027. See the Field Demonstration Update for early findings, implementation lessons, and next steps. EPRI is leading the CEC-funded demonstration, with Agatha Kazdan as the EPRI R&D Project Lead, and with technology and technical support from Conservant Systems, Scot Duncan Explore the field demonstration update at the link in the comments.

In Phoenix, extreme heat is becoming an increasingly important consideration for long-term electricity planning. To help prepare for changing conditions, EPRI and Salt River Project (SRP) combined 74 years of historical weather data with climate model projections to create detailed, forward-looking datasets for resource adequacy planning. The result gives planners hourly insights into how temperature, humidity, wind, and solar could interact in a hotter future, while supporting planning for growing demand and an evolving generation portfolio. As electricity demand grows, the future of existing nuclear plants is becoming an increasingly important part of long-term energy planning. A recent study focused on Sweden and Finland highlights the potential role of nuclear long-term operation (#LTO) in helping maintain reliable, affordable, low-carbon electricity supplies. Without additional operating life for existing reactors, the generation gaps projected for both countries could grow substantially by 2045. The study draws on international experience from Belgium, Canada, France, and the United States, identifying several factors that can influence successful LTO investment, including clear policy direction, predictable revenue structures, effective aging management, and long-term planning. EPRI's Garry G. Young and Monica Hurley contributed to the study's international assessment, bringing insights from decades of research supporting the safe, reliable, and economic long-term operation of nuclear plants. In his latest Energy Central contribution, Garry explores what the findings could mean for the Nordic region and why experience from existing nuclear fleets around the world can help inform the decisions ahead. A recent EPRI white paper, 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘜𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘬 𝘈𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴, explores how transmission utilization metrics can help the industry better understand how existing transmission infrastructure is being used across different operating conditions, network regions, and facilities. The research explores three preliminary approaches: ⚡ Real-time operational utilization incorporating N-1 security criteria 📊 Forecasted vs. actual loads 🔍 Load-drop warnings indicating stressed operating conditions Importantly, no single metric tells the full story. These metrics can provide directional insights and help identify areas or conditions that warrant further operational or transmission planning analysis, but should be considered alongside reliability, economic, and other system factors. A strong El Niño can reshape winter weather patterns, but what could that mean for the U.S. power grid? ⛈️ In a new Gizmodo article, EPRI's Erik Smith discusses how utilities can draw on climate data and past El Niño events to better understand potential regional impacts to energy demand, supply, and grid infrastructure. While every El Niño unfolds differently, historical events can offer important clues. This year’s strong, somewhat eastern-shifted El Niño, for example, shares similarities with the 1997-1998 event, providing forecasters with a useful point of comparison. Read more about what this winter could mean for the power system at the link in the comments.
