Interreg
Government Administration
EU's bridge to stronger regions. Fostering cohesion and growth through territorial cooperation in Europe and beyond
About us
Interreg, the European Union's instrument for facilitating cooperation among regions and countries within Europe and beyond, plays a vital role in advancing regional development, fostering cohesion, and mitigating economic disparities. Interreg programmes cover different territorial areas, organized under four strands: - European Cross-Border Cooperation - Transnational Cooperation - Interregional Cooperation - Outermost Regions’ Cooperation These Interreg programmes serve as engines for project partnerships aligned with the key objectives of the EU's cohesion policy for 2021-2027: • Promoting a more competitive and smarter Europe • Supporting a greener, low-carbon transition towards a net-zero carbon economy and a resilient Europe • Enhancing connectivity across Europe • Encouraging social inclusion and a more equitable Europe • Bringing Europe closer to its citizens Additionally, there are two specific Interreg objectives for the period 2021-2027: • Improving cooperation governance • Promoting a safer and more secure Europe

🔬 What if Interreg is not just about funding projects, but about changing the way our territories work? This was the question at the heart of the PO4 event “Interreg projects: Reforming the territory”, held during the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels. As Moray Gilland (DG REGIO) highlighted in Stories of European Cooperation, Interreg is increasingly becoming a laboratory for territorial reform. And this is where things get interesting. 🏥 Cross-border healthcare protocols 🤝 Joint employment services 🌱 New approaches to sustainable tourism These are more than project results. They are opportunities to test new ways of working, overcome barriers and rethink how public institutions cooperate. But what happens when the project ends? The real potential lies in turning successful experiments into lasting change: new administrative procedures, shared public services, policy tools or legal agreements. During the workshop, Interreg programmes were invited to look beyond project outputs and focus on what actually changes in the territory. In this sense, Interreg POCTEFA, Interreg Hungary-Slovakia Programme, Interreg IPA Programme "Greece - North Macedonia" and Interreg North Sea Programme presented some projects that modified administrative procedures, created shared protocols between 2 countries or developed new methodologies to address common challenges in various regions. As we look towards post-2027, one question remains: how can we make sure tested solutions are adopted, scaled up and embedded in everyday public action? 💡 The laboratory matters. What we do with its results matters even more. From testing solutions to transforming territories. That’s the potential of Interreg. #Interreg #CohesionPolicy #InterregIsSocial #AMoreSocialEurope Gilles Kittel

🏃♀️🏃♂️ Running beyond borders, together! 🇹🇷🇧🇬 Loved seeing how our friends from Interreg IPA Bulgaria-Türkiye Programme celebrated Interreg Cooperation Day 2026 in Kıyıköy! 🎉 Sport, culture and cross-border cooperation all on the same course, following the footsteps of projects that connect the past with the future 💙 Watch the video and join the run 👇
💙 Interreg

The next move for Interreg? Making sure good ideas can go further ♟️ CHESS START RO-HU offers an example of how a project's benefits can extend beyond the original participants. 🇷🇴🇭🇺 In Romania and Hungary, social services NGOs and chess organisations joined forces to address challenges affecting children from marginalised Roma communities: unequal educational opportunities, discrimination and barriers to social inclusion. Together, they developed a chess-based learning programme, reporting improvements in children's cognitive assessments and behaviour. The partners also produced a methodology guide, allowing other organisations to learn from their experience and adapt the approach to their own communities. 🇪🇺 This is an important consideration for Interreg after 2027: how to help grassroots organisations build lasting partnerships, develop solutions to shared challenges and make their experience useful to communities beyond the original project. 🔗 Read more about our perspective: https://lnkd.in/enTsncQU #Interreg #EURegions #TerritorialCooperation #SocialInclusion #FutureOfEurope

🤝🌍 Inclusion means creating opportunities for everyone to participate, move, work and experience their communities. On World Inclusion Day, we spotlight four Interreg projects helping remove barriers and make territories more accessible and inclusive: 👩💼 CeMeWE, from Central Baltic Programme, supports immigrant women in strengthening their skills and employment opportunities. 💡 TASK4ISI, from Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE Programme, promotes inclusive entrepreneurship for groups that are still underrepresented in business. ♿ DANOVA NEXT, from Interreg Danube Region Programme, is improving transport accessibility for passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility. 🚲 Green Railway II, from Interreg Estonia-Latvia, is making cross-border tourism routes more accessible to people with different needs. Different challenges, one shared ambition: making sure more people can take part. 💙 #WorldInclusionDay #Interreg #CohesionPolicy #InterregIsSocial #AMoreSocialEurope

For people travelling across borders, the weak point in a journey is often where two transport systems meet. That is one of the practical challenges emerging from consultations on the future of Interreg. 🚃 Citizens and stakeholders point towards closer planning of transport services across borders, alongside greener mobility pilots, targeted improvements to regional connectivity and stronger links with EU and national transport investments. Taken together, these priorities suggest a clear direction: look at cross-border mobility as one journey, rather than separate transport systems ending at the border. 🇪🇺 These findings are helping inform discussions about Interreg after 2027 and how territorial cooperation can complement wider investment in European connectivity. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/enTsncQU #Interreg #EURegions #ConnectedEurope #FutureOfEurope
