It was an honor to join Senator Kaine, Congressman Subramanyam, and Congressman Vindman yesterday to break ground on a brand-new air traffic control tower at Washington Manassas Airport (HEF) in Northern Virginia. I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the International Day of the Air Traffic Controller than marking the start of construction on this state-of-the-art facility that will give our proud air traffic controllers the modern tools and infrastructure they need to ensure the future safety and growth of HEF. Thank you to our federal (including my FAA Airports Team here in the Eastern Region), state, city, and county partners who made this project possible, as well as the entire HEF team, including Airport Director Juan Rivera, for hosting a wonderful event. The funding for this tower--$41 million--is a great example of what happens when federal, state, and local partners share a vision and work together to invest in infrastructure that will promote safety, bring high-pay jobs, connect communities, and drive regional growth. While the USDOT and FAA have made great strides to modernize our air traffic control system through the Brand New Air Traffic Control initiative, our work isn’t done. We need Congress to pass the Modern Skies Act to finish the job, including to complete our ATC system upgrades and to replace many more outdated towers just like we’re doing here at HEF. The Modern Skies Act will also provide airports around the country with the funding they desperately need to overhaul aging facilities, invest in capacity upgrades that will improve efficiency and promote growth, and build modern terminals.
