Purple is the color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It stands for courage, survival, and the work of ending domestic violence. Wearing it tells survivors they’re seen and believed, and it can start conversations that too often stay quiet. Haven’t put on purple yet? There's still time! A scarf, a pin, or a purple sweater all count. 💜 📸 Snap a photo in your purple 🗣️ Use it to start a conversation about domestic violence advocacy 📚 Learn how we support survivors of domestic violence at fvaplaw.org #PurpleThursday #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth #DVAM
About us
Family Violence Appellate Project is the only nonprofit organization in the state of California dedicated to helping domestic violence survivors appeal dangerous court decisions that leave them and/or their children at risk of ongoing abuse. We provide free legal representation to appeal cases that put domestic violence survivors in danger, overturning these decisions and helping survivors get the safety and justice they deserve. By obtaining publication of our cases, we are also setting new legal precedents throughout California that prioritize the safety of abuse survivors and children. THE PROBLEM Decisions reached by trial courts in domestic violence cases far too often leave survivors and their children in danger of ongoing abuse. At least half of batterers who frequently abuse their spouses also frequently abuse their children, and one study found that abusers are granted custody in 54% of custody cases involving documented domestic violence. Many survivors in this situation, who may have had poor or no legal representation in the trial court, either do not know that they can appeal their case or lack the financial resources to appeal. As a result, there is little appellate precedent for trial courts to follow, and they are not rigorously enforcing key statutes designed to protect children from abusive parents. THE SOLUTION FVAP partners with pro bono attorneys from California's top law firms to make sure we're winning cases for domestic violence survivors. The average of successful appeals in California is only 21%, but at FVAP, we win 80% of the appeals we bring and 100% of the appeals we defend. We're holding courts accountable for the safety of abuse survivors and their children. We're changing the law by building up a body of precedential case law that will help families throughout the state. And we're empowering domestic violence survivors to get the safety and justice they deserve.

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re highlighting the programs that support survivors, in October and all year long. 💜 At FVAP, that means making sure survivors of domestic violence and their children have a real chance at justice, even after a trial court gets it wrong. Take a look below at how our programs make that possible.

Last week, we heard from stakeholders at our virtual Town Hall about what our California Supreme Court win means in practice. Now, hear directly from the people at FVAP working every day to make this decision real — starting with FVAP Senior Managing Attorney Cory Hernandez. 🎥 This ruling established that every survivor has the right to the record they need to be believed. That right is protected — but turning it into practice, court by court, across every California courtroom, is still ahead of us. Make your gift today at fvaplaw.org/donate https://lnkd.in/e2SQnxVp

📚 Back in August, we had the opportunity to bring an overview of FVAP's mission and programs to Hoge Fenton's all-attorney meeting. Grateful for the chance to share the work we do — legal services and advocacy for survivors of family violence — and how firms like Hoge Fenton can get involved, whether through pro bono partnership, amicus support, or other ways to engage. Thank you to everyone at Hoge Fenton for the warm welcome and thoughtful questions! Want FVAP's team at your firm next? Reach out — we're always happy to connect.

On September 10th, FVAP hosted a virtual town hall with stakeholders from across California to talk through what our CA Supreme Court win means in practice. What stood out: 🔹 The ruling was unambiguous: courts must create a record of what happens. If they cannot provide a court reporter, and a litigant cannot afford one, courts must use electronic recording without burdensome procedural hurdles, in all civil cases. 🔹 Changes are already happening. One town hall participant shared that her court initially tried to require a fee waiver before granting her recording request. Citing the new mandate directly was enough to change that on the spot. 🔹 FVAP and our partners are working with our community to ensure implementation is happening, consistently and meaningfully, in all 58 courts across the state. The ruling protects the right to a record — but making that right real, court by court, is still ahead of us. Your gift today helps ensure survivors get the record they need and the support they deserve. 👉 Make Your Donation at https://lnkd.in/g_3hcEQD #EveryoneDeservesARecord

On August 10, the California Supreme Court ruled in FVAP's favor, establishing the right to a free verbatim record of civil proceedings for those who cannot afford a private court reporter — a critical step toward real access to appeal for survivors and their families. This ruling, however, is only the beginning. On Thursday, September 10th at 12:00pm PST, FVAP, Covington & Burling, Legal Aid SoCal, and Bay Area Legal Aid are convening a virtual town hall with stakeholders across California to discuss what comes next: ensuring every survivor who needs a free recording receives one, in every California court. Everyone deserves the right to a record. Join the conversation: https://lnkd.in/g5JWUTf7?pwd=6YEtwWCcaxA0knxpWdiw87nyaVd1wA.1
