On Monday evening, I travelled to London to hear Sabrina Dallafi or, Director-General of the OPCW, speak about the continued importance of international collaboration in preventing the re-emergence of chemical weapons. I left reflecting on three moments in particular. 1. Representation matters at every level. It was inspiring to hear from the first woman to lead the OPCW. Representation at the highest levels matters, not simply for what it represents today, but for the possibilities it opens up for those who will follow. 2. Purpose can be found early in a career. I had the pleasure of meeting two degree apprentices whose passion for the prohibition of chemical weapons was infectious. Hearing how their work at DSTL supports this vital mission was a reminder that meaningful contributions to the chemical sciences can be made at every stage of a career. 3. Responsible chemistry starts with education. I was encouraged to hear an audience member highlight IUPAC’s work to establish a working group exploring how we can educate young people about the prohibition of chemical weapons, including through themes such as responsible chemistry. Developing the chemical sciences means more than advancing what we know and what we can do. It also means taking responsibility for how that knowledge is used, equipping future generations to make informed decisions, and fostering a culture where scientific progress and ethical responsibility are always interlinked. As an early-career scientist and Trustee of the RSC, I find this especially important. #ChemicalSciences #ResponsibleChemistry #ChemicalWeapons #ScienceLeadership

Scientific progress must continue to be matched by responsible stewardship. Speaking at the Royal Society of Chemistry in London, OPCW Director-General Sabrina Dallafior highlighted that preventing the re-emergence of chemical weapons is a shared responsibility. Through science, responsible innovation, and international cooperation, the OPCW, the scientific community, and States Parties can ensure chemistry continues to serve humanity, not harm it.
