Media literacy isn’t something we master once and move on from. The media we encounter changes constantly, and the ways we understand, create, and respond to it have to keep evolving too. A media literate person thinks critically about the messages they encounter, considers who created them and why, recognizes how perspective shapes meaning, and reflects on how their own experiences and beliefs influence interpretation. They also create and share media with intention and continue developing these skills over time. That makes media literacy a lifelong practice, not a destination. It helps people navigate everyday decisions, participate more thoughtfully in their communities, and have a greater say in the media environment they help shape. Create is where media literacy becomes expression. On Thursday, October 29, we’ll celebrate U.S. Media Literacy Week by exploring what it means to CREATE media. Creating can take many forms, from writing and speaking to making art, producing videos, sharing on social media, or simply communicating an idea with others. Creating media also means thinking about the choices behind what we make. What do we want people to understand? What are our sources? What perspectives are we sharing or leaving out? Who could be helped or harmed by our message? Media literacy gives us the opportunity to be thoughtful not only about the media we consume, but also about the media we contribute to.
