“Why isn’t this mandatory training?”
It’s a question we hear again and again after workplace screenings of the People’s Emergency Briefing.
And I think I know why.
For many people in the room, it’s the first time they have truly felt what the climate and nature crisis means, despite years of compliance forms and reports.
As COP31 approaches, that feeling is exactly what seems to be missing.
UNEP’s new Emissions Gap Report, The Point of Return, is stark: holding warming to 1.5°C without overshoot is no longer possible.
To keep the overshoot low and brief, emissions must fall 18% by 2030 and 45% by 2035. Even if every national pledge were delivered in full, we would cut just 5–8% and 11–15%. The policies actually in place point towards 2.8°C this century, and rising.
We are not short of good intentions. I meet brilliant, caring leaders every week. Yet the system they work within still rewards the extractive and the short-term.
It keeps most of us doing what we have always done, concentrating wealth, deepening inequality, hollowing out nature and quietly mortgaging our children’s future. Oxfam calculates that the richest 1% had used up their fair share of carbon for 2026 by 10th January.
So what will it take?
It's quite clear that it isn’t a lack of data. If anything, we are drowning in it: UK SRS, TCFD, SECR, CSRD, TNFD, SBTi, CDP, GRI, ISO 14001, B Corp, EcoVadis...and on it goes; a minefield of measurement. And still nothing really changes, not at the speed and scale this moment demands.
Because knowing is not the same as feeling.
In 48 calm, clear minutes, the People's Emergency Briefing workplace screening brings leading UK scientists, health professionals and experts together to show what the crisis means for our food, health, economy and security.
And the screening is catalysing change. A recent independent evaluation by the CAST centre, matching viewers before and after the screening, found the share expecting major disruption now or within a decade rose from 75% to 89%. 89% felt better informed; 87% more motivated to act.
In workplaces, that feeling is becoming action. Of the hosts who have told us what happened next:
→ 79% report ongoing conversations between colleagues
→ 36% have taken it to senior leaders or the Board
→ 26% are weaving climate and nature more fully into strategy
→ 21% have engaged an MP or policymaker
More than 5,600 screenings have now taken place or planned, over 1,300 of them in workplaces.
