About us
Each year Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) provides free assistance to more than 100,000 individuals and families through innovative projects that expand access to justice and address the most critical needs of Los Angeles’ poverty communities. Founded in 1965 as part of the nation’s War on Poverty, NLSLA is now one of the largest and most prominent public interest law offices in California. NLSLA attorneys, based in offices, courthouses and clinics throughout Los Angeles County, specialize in areas of the law that disproportionately impact the poor, including housing, public benefits and healthcare. Our Advocates work with doctors to improve individual and community health, help families maintain income security during tough economic times, save homes and protect our neighborhoods, help survivors of domestic violence and victims of special crimes, and engage in high-impact legal advocacy that leads to systemic change. Through a combination of direct representation, policy advocacy and impact litigation, NLSLA attorneys work to reduce the effects of poverty in Los Angeles’ low-income communities, support the development of opportunities for individuals and families to move themselves out of poverty, and protect and enforce the legal rights of poor people by ensuring access to our justice system.

With the support of NLSLA and Orihuela Law Firm, P.C., Alberto fought back after his employer failed to accommodate his needs for his medical condition. Together, they helped him obtain a settlement, which included lost and unpaid wages, other damages, and the justice he deserves. Everyone deserves the opportunity to work free from discrimination, and with the accommodations they need to succeed. NLSLA continues to advocate for people with disabilities and their right to work. This Hispanic Heritage Month, NLSLA proudly celebrates the rich cultures, histories, and countless contributions of the Latino/e communities we serve throughout Los Angeles County. Access to justice should never depend on a person’s language or background. NLSLA remains committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring that individuals and families have access to legal information, resources, and free legal assistance when they need it most. #hispanicheritagemonth

NLSLA is experiencing a historic transformation, and we are honored to share the news with you. Lambreni Waddell has been named NLSLA's Executive Director – Designate, and she will formally take on leadership of the organization January 1, 2027. NLSLA President & CEO Yvonne Mariajimenez will retire at the end of 2026 after 48 years at NLSLA. A collaborative leader in community advocacy and social, justice, Lambreni Waddell previously acted as Chief of Staff and served as NLSLA's first Director of Community Engagement. In her dynamic and impactful career, she has expanded access to healthcare enrollment, strengthened NLSLA's pro bono network, enhanced our re-entry programs, and built lasting connections across our teams and service areas. Yvonne Mariajimenez leaves NLSLA with a powerful legacy of championing the rights of low-income individuals and families across Los Angeles County. Her commitment to the communities NLSLA serves has shaped her work throughout her career—from helping to bring about the passage of the California Homeowner Bill of Rights in the aftermath of the foreclosure crisis, to advancing NLSLA’s Medical-Legal Community Partnerships to address the legal issues that affect health and well-being, to building NLSLA’s capacity to provide critical legal assistance to individuals and families affected by disasters. We celebrate all Yvonne has done for NLSLA and the communities we serve, and we look forward to a bright future with Lambreni leading the organization.
