  • As part of the ongoing initiative at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) to streamline small-scope processes and develop action plans, the team recently held a Focus and Finish Mechanic Workshop regarding the Shafting Stress Relief Process. The team’s primary goal is to provide the Inside Machine Shop (Shop 31) with a single, larger, area of post weld stress relieving to minimize the need for multiple shaft straightening iterations using manual spot gas heating after installation in the lathe. Optimizing this process will reduce the amount of time it takes to straighten the shaft from a few weeks to days. • This October, Norfolk Naval Shipyard recognizes National Energy Awareness Month and the importance of responsible energy use in supporting our people, facilities, and mission. Energy conservation is a team effort. Simple actions—turning off lights and equipment when not in use, reporting energy waste, and using resources efficiently—help strengthen operational readiness while reducing unnecessary costs. Every watt counts. Together, we can help power the NNSY mission responsibly.
