From an observation during a shift to research shared on a national stage, nurses at NYU Langone Health are helping move patient care forward. Our Department of Nursing Science and Innovation, led by Kathleen Zavotsky, PhD, RN, gives nurses across our health system the mentorship, resources, and support to turn bedside ideas into formal research. At NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, Brittany Genovese, MSN, RN, helped develop a skin champion program that designates a nurse on each shift to help ensure best practices are followed for preventing and treating pressure injuries. The program resulted in a 44.9-percent reduction in pressure injuries. At NYU Langone Orthopedic Center, Monica Gamez-Perez, BSN, RN, developed HEAL-SLE, a nurse-led pilot study evaluating virtual Reiki for adults with lupus. She is now building on that research through NYU Langone’s two-year Nursing Science Fellowship, which gives nurses protected time and mentorship to advance their research, pursue publication, and share their findings more broadly. “I’m immensely proud of the engagement we’ve had from nursing staff when it comes to advancing research and capitalizing on their professional curiosity,” Dr. Zavotsky says. “It’s been the biggest honor of my career to see our nurses and nurse scientists develop.”

Exceptional patient care depends on countless people working behind the scenes. Across NYU Langone Health, dozens of teams help ensure every part of the patient experience runs smoothly, from preparing surgical instruments to maintaining the technology clinicians rely on every day. Their precision and attention to detail help uphold the high standards reflected in our No. 1 ranking for quality care in the U.S. by Vizient, which we’ve recently earned for the fifth consecutive year. Erika Kozak and Avalon Nielsen, members of NYU Langone’s Clinical Engineering team, are two of the many people who make this level of care possible. Their work helps ensure the technology clinicians use to diagnose, monitor, and treat patients is safe, reliable, and ready when it matters most.
