Energy demand is scaling faster than the grid can keep up, and the race is on to build the technology and infrastructure to generate and deliver that power. Join the Redwood team in San Francisco on October 29 to learn how Redwood is building that technology to power the future and the work that we’re hiring great people for! We’ll have drinks & snacks, as well as a chance to see what we’re building and to connect with our leadership team. Limited spots — RSVP with the link below. https://luma.com/b3u04qyl

Securing U.S. critical minerals. Powering America’s energy future.
About us
Redwood Materials is building the U.S. stockpile of critical materials and deploying large-scale energy storage. Founded by JB Straubel, the company produces lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, and cathode active material at scale in the U.S., manufactures key components for advanced batteries, and deploys energy storage systems that power data centers and the nation’s grid. Redwood is expanding domestic capacity for next-generation energy storage and strengthening U.S. energy dominance.

That's right, we are paring repurposed EV batteries with our own power electronics and software, "helping AI data centers get power faster without waiting on new grid connections to America’s backed-up electric grid." Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/gqjxZNp9

A massive energy unlock, indeed. That's the idea behind our work with Rivian and the way we're approaching today's increasing energy demand more broadly. Recovering and repurposing battery material efficiently is one of the ways we're able to deploy energy faster, more flexibly, and at lower cost than waiting on the grid alone.
A massive energy unlock. We’re expanding our partnership with Redwood Materials to collaborate across the full lifecycle of Rivian battery packs. A battery pack that’s no longer right for a high-performance EV doesn’t have to be done. It can be repurposed into stationary energy storage to support grid reliability and store clean energy. And when it truly reaches the end of the road, it can be recycled. Battery scrap and end-of-life packs go back through the process, recovering over 95% of critical minerals—including lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper—for a domestic supply chain. Building on our initial energy storage deployment at our manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, we’re proving how a fully circular battery ecosystem can power a cleaner, more resilient future. The gap between when power is needed and when the grid can provide it has become one of the defining constraints of this moment. So, companies need a partner who can supply power quickly, along with the materials and equipment that go into it. At Redwood, we're building our way through that gap. We pair our own battery systems with solar and other generation sources to stand up power projects end to end, on a timeline that is faster than the grid can deliver. That's the foundation for the intelligent microgrids we're building next, sized for the demand coming from AI data centers, hyperscalers, and heavy industry. Our work with Rivian is one example of how to solve for this moment. More on how we think about our energy ecosystem: https://lnkd.in/giK_wizJ

Claire McConnell joined the Build, Repeat. (A Paces Podcast) with James McWalter to talk about how repurposed EV batteries can help AI data centers get power faster — including why every month waiting on interconnection can cost tens of millions, and why renewables plus storage is becoming the fastest path to power. Thanks for having us on the show! Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gHWUb68g
AI data centers can't wait five years for an interconnection. For a 100 MW site, every month offline could mean $25–40M in lost revenue. We recorded the most recent episode of the Build, Repeat. podcast with Claire McConnell of Redwood Materials. She explains how repurposed EV batteries are opening a faster path to power – that includes a 63 MWh second-life microgrid, which has powered Crusoe's AI data centers for the past year at over 99% availability. You'll want to listen if you're eager to hear more about: ➡️ Speed to power for AI data centers ➡️ Off-grid solar + storage and bring-your-own-capacity pathways ➡️ Why renewables + storage could become the default, with gas as backup Check out the full episode, link in comments. Thanks to everyone who packed into our office for the live recording!

Energy is taking center stage in nearly every conversation about America's future. For good reason, as AI and industry scale up, so does the demand for reliable, homegrown power. Last week at Axios House, our founder and CEO JB Straubel joined policymakers and industry leaders to talk about what's next for the grid. JB is optimistic: yes, today's grid is strained, but the microgrids and distributed energy resources coming online now will increasingly connect back into it and expand the resources available to all of us. This is the battery ecosystem we're building at Redwood. We're taking a domestic supply of energy storage materials, power electronics, software and the operational capabilities so the U.S. can scale clean, reliable power without depending on foreign supply chains. American energy dominance isn't just about producing more it's about building smarter, more resilient systems. That's the work we're focused on. https://lnkd.in/gi_7nsbS

Redwood is building to ensure we have a resilient energy future. It started with first addressing that there was too much value leaving the supply chain in the form of waste. Through our recycling work we saw the need and ability to take on energy storage at a moment when the grid needs it more than almost anything else. Joe Fath, thanks for sharing your perspective on this arc, and more importantly your and Eclipse the team’s support of our work as we continue to address this important opportunity.
One of the things I’ve learned over two+ decades of growth investing: The best companies rarely have just one act. They solve a foundational problem, build real capabilities and advantages in the process, then recognize when those advantages give them the right to solve the next one. Redwood Materials is one of the clearest examples I’ve seen. What started with battery recycling became refining and remanufacturing, and today, powered land and energy storage. Each new business wasn’t a pivot away from the core. It was a logical extension of what JB Straubel and the team had already built. That’s what I look for in a durable compounder: Not just a company that can get bigger, but one whose capabilities create entirely new avenues for growth. I wrote about Redwood’s three acts, what made each possible, and why this is exactly the kind of company we built Eclipse’s growth strategy to help scale. For more: https://bit.ly/4xCjU6X

JB Straubel joined Axios at NY Climate week to talk about the energy moment we're in and why speed, not just decarbonization, is now the defining challenge. "Growing the net energy base while strengthening energy security is exactly why we built Redwood Energy. We're turning EV batteries into storage, backed by our own power electronics that let us bring mixed packs together into one system." JB put it simply: "This energy moment we're in is the most exciting I've felt in my whole career. I've been working on energy since I can remember. Never has there been quite so much growth, excitement, innovation, all colliding together." Watch the full conversation: https://lnkd.in/dCrmvGix

Our founder and CEO, JB Straubel, is joining Axios House at New York Climate Week to talk about the energy constraints behind the AI boom and why waiting on new grid capacity won't solve it. The real fix means going back to first principles: where the energy actually comes from, how you store it, and how you deliver it reliably at the load profiles AI demands, not the ones the grid was built for decades ago. It's the thesis behind Redwood Energy: build power where the load is, use what already exists, starting with EV batteries that still have plenty of life left and skip the years-long queue for new capacity.
