How do you explain something like 9/11 to a child? Twenty-five years ago, the team at Sesame Workshop didn't have an easy answer. So, we asked child psychologists and emergency response experts to help us find one. Our job wasn't to explain what happened. It was to help every child feel safe again – whatever they had seen or heard, and no matter who or what they might have lost. With advice from experts, we decided not to talk about 9/11 directly. Instead, we would show children how to process the feelings that this kind of tragedy triggers. Four episodes in our 33rd season focused on fire safety and appreciation for first responders, coping with loss, and bullying. Sesame also worked with the New York State Office of Mental Health to create a set of evergreen resources called "You Can Ask," to give parents and caregivers the language to answer their children's difficult questions. The impact of 9/11 on New York City and the team at Sesame Street was profound. And its legacy has shaped how we show up for children and families in the most difficult moments ever since. As we mark the 25th anniversary today, you can read more about Sesame’s response to 9/11 in The Conversation U.S. here: https://lnkd.in/gQBa9cng

In the wake of historic wildfires in the Pacific Northwest over the last few weeks, Sesame Workshop jumped into action to share resources and comfort with families in affected areas. The team joined Project:Camp in Spokane, Washington to distribute Sesame care kits at a local elementary school and our friend Abby Cadabby even stopped by to lead a sing-along and give lots of magical, Muppet hugs! We checked in with our local partner KSPS PBS, who shared that, “After what has been a difficult and unusual few weeks for our community, I don't think I fully appreciated beforehand how meaningful it would be simply to have that moment of fellowship, connection, and joy together.” As extreme weather events like wildfires continue to become more frequent and intense, I’m so proud of the work Sesame Workshop is doing to help children and families prepare, cope, and recover with support from their community.

Loved sitting down with Jason LaRose, CEO of Bombas, to talk about leading mission-driven organizations through moments of growth and change for CNN’s new series, “The 1 on 1.” Whether non-profit or for-profit, legacy brand or startup, the key to success is staying laser focused on your mission – your North Star. For Sesame Workshop, that means approaching everything we do through the lens of a 3-year-old. How are we helping children grow smarter, stronger, and kinder? We’re so grateful to Bombas for their support in helping us achieve that mission. Watch our full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/g8zA3a6U

  • Nearly 118 million people around the world have been displaced by conflict and crisis, with young children among the most vulnerable. That's why Sesame Workshop and The LEGO Foundation partnered with the International Rescue Committee and BRAC to launch Play to Learn, a humanitarian initiative that's reached over 34 million children, caregivers, and facilitators in 59 countries with researched-backed content and direct services to help them learn, grow, and thrive. Play is more than fun—it’s how children build lifelong skills, and it provides stress relief, normalcy, and joy for those affected by trauma. Now, through Play to Learn, it can support critical early childhood development opportunities when traditional services are disrupted. #WorldRefugeeDay Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e2fBwcbQ

From 1969 straight through to today, Sesame Street is possible because of bold philanthropic investment. Support from Ford Foundation enabled Sesame Street’s creators to explore the radical idea that television could be used to teach children with less access to quality early education.  56 years later, that hypothesis has more than borne out – Sesame Street is the most-studied children’s television show in history. Over 1,000 studies have proven its efficacy in helping children learn their letters and numbers, and fostering empathy, understanding, and kindness.  Thanks to Ford Foundation for spotlighting our history and how we continue to deliver on our nonprofit mission to help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder!

Swipe to learn the surprising story behind the beloved children’s show, Sesame Street. We are proud to have supported the evolution of the program since the very beginning. As we commemorate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (#AANHPI #AAPI) Heritage Month, the story of Ji-Young showcases the positive impact of offering the next generation more opportunities to see themselves reflected on the screen. #AANHPIMonth #AAPIMonth #FordFoundation90
