It was great to meet so many talented, driven, and compassionate students preparing to make a meaningful impact in dental healthcare. Events like these remind us how exciting the future of healthcare truly is. We had the privilege of connecting with aspiring professionals, sharing our mission, discussing career pathways, and highlighting the many opportunities available within our organization. Today is a win for patients, as Governor Newsom signed the state budget, which includes funding for the Medi-Cal Dental program for another year. Western Dental is the largest Medi-Cal Dental provider in California, and today's news means that the patients who rely on us for care will have uninterrupted access. We look forward to working with stakeholders in the coming months to identify a long-term solution that will provide ongoing access to care for years to come. For decades, California’s Medi-Cal Dental program suffered from chronic underfunding, with the Little Hoover Commission and State Auditor documenting that low reimbursement rates left millions of low income Californians unable to access timely, basic dental care. These findings were echoed by major editorial boards across the state, which described Medi-Cal Dental as a “disgrace” and a “shameful failure.” Proposition 56—overwhelmingly approved by California voters—marked a turning point. Western Dental and other safety net providers were able to expand access—opening more than 100 new clinics in high need communities—because the state made a sustained commitment to rebuilding its Medi-Cal Dental infrastructure. We cannot roll back that progress, which is why it’s critical for the Governor and the California State Legislature to fund those services in this year’s state budget. 

While we celebrate children's smiles every day, it’s extra special this month, as February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. It’s an important reminder that healthy smiles start early and last a lifetime. 🦷✨ Every child deserves access to quality dental care, education about oral hygiene, and providers who understand the communities they come from - at the very baseline. Good oral health isn’t just about teeth, it’s about confidence, overall health, and setting kids up for success in school and beyond. Things we can all support! This month is especially meaningful because we see every day how access to care can change a child’s future. From first checkups to preventive care and education, we’re proud to serve families from all backgrounds and help build healthier communities.
