Yesterday I had the opportunity to serve on the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court Judicial Nominating Commission, following my appointment by Speaker of the House Javier Martínez. We spent the day interviewing candidates for the vacant Metropolitan Court seat and ultimately sending our recommendations to the Governor for consideration. This was a new experience for me, and one I’m really thankful for. As one of the few non-attorneys at the table, I appreciated being able to bring a different perspective to the conversation and ask questions about how everyday people experience the justice system, especially those navigating it without an attorney. How do we make sure people understand what is happening, what is being asked of them, and feel like they’ve actually been heard? I left with a whole new appreciation for the discernment and empathy this work requires, and the immense responsibility that comes with serving on the bench. Really grateful to have had a seat at this table, and a voice in a process that tremendously impacts our gente and our community.
