Katherine Clarke's The Wall Street Journal story asks a question New Yorkers shouldn't have to ask: when you search for a home online, are you seeing everything that's for sale? We built StreetEasy 20 years ago because the answer used to be no. Finding a home here meant calling a broker and hoping they called back. Every firm kept its listings to itself, and buyers had no independent way to see the market. Open information changed that, and it's why New Yorkers trust this market today. Over the last 20 years, our view at StreetEasy hasn't changed: - All buyers should be able to see all of the listings for sale. Period. - Sellers are best served when the most buyers can see their home. - Agents should win on expertise, service, and trust, not on who controls access. Every platform and brokerage says it wants more choice for consumers. Choice starts with being able to see all of the options available. Open markets, open doors. We're not going back. • 🏠 New NYC listings reached their highest level since March 2022 with 4,951 homes newly listed for sale in September, 7.6% higher than a year ago. 🏷️ In the aftermath of the strong summer sales season, inventory remained low and buyer competition remained hot, with 21.1% of homes selling above their latest asking price in September. 🏙️ As rising mortgage rates kept buyers in the rental market, rental inventory fell 15.3% year-over-year in September, the sharpest annual decline in four years. 📉 Competition is spreading beyond Manhattan, with Brooklyn inventory falling 18.4% and Queens inventory down 5.4%. • Despite sharp increases in mortgage rates since March, NYC sellers rushed into the market in September, looking to leverage strong buyer demand. 4,951 homes were newly listed for sale in September, 7.6% higher than a year ago and the highest since March 2022. As more would-be homebuyers bide their time as renters amid rising mortgage rates, fewer homes will likely return to the rental market, deepening the city’s severe housing shortage. • Most deals have an agent on both sides of the table — but what happens when you treat the other side as a partner, not a competitor? In episode two of The One That Changed Everything, Brian Worthman of Mark O'Brien Development explains why generosity and collaboration have become foundational to his career. Hear Brian talk mentorship, sharing opportunities, and how one deal can lead to the next three. In an open market, agents win by bringing more value to the table, not by holding information back. For Brian, giving something away doesn't leave you with less; it brings you more. This is part of StreetEasy's Open Markets. • In the first episode of The One That Changed Everything, two NYC agents share the career-defining first win that changed their business. Jane Sosi of SERHANT. and Sarah Silva of Brown Harris Stevens look back on the client, the close, and the doors that opened afterward. In an open market, a single deal can come from anywhere, and it can lead anywhere. For Jane, a StreetEasy Experts lead became her first transaction in NYC and the beginning of a new chapter on a team. For Sarah, one client's referral led to another until she was helping an entire graduating class find homes. This is part of StreetEasy's Open Markets. • New York is full of possibilities. You should get to see all of them. "Open markets. Open doors." That's our commitment to keeping NYC real estate visible and accessible. An open market means homes for sale or rent are shared publicly, so more New Yorkers can see their options. Private listing networks and closed marketplaces are changing the way NYC housing works as more homes are being pulled from public view. That means buyers and renters won't get to see homes that are right for them, sellers reach fewer potential buyers, and agents have less opportunity to grow their businesses. StreetEasy believes real estate works best when New Yorkers can see what's out there and decide for themselves.
