As more countries and private companies enter the space arena, some questions are becoming increasingly important: who gets to shape the industry's future and what responsibilities come with that influence? IgnitedThinkers recently had the immense honor of sitting down with Krystal Azelton, Senior Director of Program Planning at the Secure World Foundation, to discuss these important questions and her journey into the space industry. What makes Krystal’s path interesting is that she did not begin with a traditional engineering or aerospace background. She studied international politics at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, earned a Master of Public Administration, and began her career in international development before finding her way into space policy and strategy. Since then, she has worked across government, commercial, and international organizations, including NASA, where she contributed to strategic planning and received a NASA Group Achievement Award. Today, Krystal works at the intersection of space, policy, international cooperation, and sustainability. The Secure World Foundation is focused on a question that I think every new space company, engineer, scientist, and entrepreneur should be thinking about: How do we build an industry that can grow rapidly while remaining secure, sustainable, peaceful, and beneficial to humanity? In our conversation, we explored some fascinating questions: (1) As commercial space expands, what responsibilities should new space companies take seriously from the very beginning? (2) What does meaningful international cooperation look like when more countries, companies, and organizations are becoming space actors? (3) How can we think about sustainability not as a constraint on innovation, but as something that enables the space industry to exist and thrive for generations? Listen to our thought-provoking conversation and Krystal’s inspiring journey into the industry at https://lnkd.in/ecRG_WXE. Krystal, thank you so much for sharing your journey, your perspective, and your vision for a rapidly evolving space industry. It was an absolute pleasure to learn from you!
