Task Force Dagger
Shortly after the joint special operation forces departed Objective Gecko, Army Special Forces teams infiltrated northern Afghanistan from Uzbekistan and linked up with the Northern Alliance, building upon the critical groundwork and relationships established by the Northern Afghanistan Liaison Team (NALT). Working alongside their Afghan partners, these Green Berets trained, equipped, advised, and coordinated anti-Taliban forces while directing devastating U.S. airpower against enemy positions.
Some operating on horseback across Afghanistan’s unforgiving mountains and valleys, the men who became known as the “Horse Soldiers” combined unconventional warfare, indigenous partnerships, and precision airpower to break Taliban control, liberate key cities, and fundamentally change the course of the campaign.
Together with their Afghan partners and supporting aircrews, they helped topple the Taliban regime in a matter of weeks and denied al-Qaeda the sanctuary from which it had attacked the United States.
The men of Task Force Sword and Dagger operated far from established bases and without the conventional support normally available to a deployed force, these Special Operations warriors depended upon one another—their courage, skill, adaptability, and unbreakable trust. Their actions stand as an enduring testament to the courage, sacrifice, and fighting spirit of America’s Special Operations community—and to those who answered the nation’s call when America took the fight to the enemy.
