Transportation Connects Us
About us
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) was officially established in 1967 by combining formerly independent agencies and the Department of Motor Vehicles (which included the State Highway Commission, State Aeronautics Commission and State Patrol). WisDOT supports all forms of transportation. The department is responsible for planning, building and maintaining Wisconsin's network of state highways and Interstate highway system. The department shares the costs of building and operating county and local transportation systems - from highways to public transit and other modes. WisDOT plans, promotes and financially supports statewide air, rail and water transportation, as well as bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The department works closely with other state, federal and local agencies to meet changing and growing travel needs. Transportation impacts everyone and WisDOT is committed to providing the safest, most efficient and highest quality transportation services to best serve the needs of the state, its citizens and many visitors. The department is made up of three executive offices and six divisions organized according to transportation function. WisDOT's main office is located in Madison, but the department maintains regional offices throughout the state as a way to preserve the local approach to transportation development and better serve customer needs.

SAFETY SUCCESS: An intersection in Brown County saw a significant reduction in crashes after being converted from a two-way stop-controlled intersection into a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT). In the three years before the project was completed, there were 14 total crashes at the intersection of WIS 57 and County K near Green Bay. In the three years after the RCUT was completed, there were only two total crashes. RCUT intersections reduce the crash potential by rerouting left-turn and through vehicles from the side roads. Motorists approaching the highway from the side road looking to turn left are required to turn right and then make a U-turn at a designated median opening. WORKING FOR YOU IN OZAUKEE COUNTY: Crews are putting the finishing touches on a slope stabilization project on WIS 57 to improve safety. In recent years, a slope on the east side of the highway was showing signs of erosion. To find the best solution to fix it, during the design phase of the project, WisDOT conducted a geotechnical exploration. From that review, it was decided to use vertical rigid elements (miniature pilings) to be driven into the embankment to strengthen the slope. Unstable slopes can undermine structural foundations and compromise several elements of a roadway. Additionally, they can be costly to maintain. It is critical to stabilize these slopes to preserve the structural integrity of the roadway and safety for the traveling public. Throughout the life of this project, WisDOT teams worked closely with the owner of a nearby campground, located at the bottom of the slope. “Communication and input from nearby businesses and residents are always welcomed and encouraged,” WisDOT Project Manager Kurt said. “We were able to meet the business’s needs while also ensuring safety for those on the highway.” In addition to stabilizing the slope, this project also included: • Culvert replacement • Concrete pavement replacement • Grading and storm sewer work • New pavement marking All lanes of WIS 57 are currently open as crews complete restoration work. Governor Tony Evers and WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman joined Brown County leaders today to celebrate the completion of the new Interstate 41 and Southbridge Road interchange near De Pere. The new interchange - which is anticipated to open next week - connects I-41 with Brown County’s South Bridge Connector project. It will bolster regional connectivity and improve access for residents, commuters and businesses. The new interchange includes multi-lane roundabouts and a shared-use path along the north side of Southbridge Road. “The Southbridge Road interchange is an essential piece of the puzzle that together improves safety and traffic flow from the Fox Cities all the way to Green Bay,” Boardman said.
