One of the first times I was promoted, I started managing my peers. Ugh. I really struggled because I desperately wanted to be the cool boss. I wanted my former peers to still like me. Who wouldn't? I was worried that being their boss would change our friendship. I was worried that if I set boundaries, it would make me seem cold or distant and they would stop liking me. Sometimes it was just easier to say yes than to risk our relationship changing. Now that I was the boss, our relationship did have to evolve. And if I'm really honest, I wasn't ready.
