Well this is just cool. We're partnering up again with the Metcalf Institute for a constructive climate journalism training. And in this one, Katherine Markova will take you on an interactive tour of En-ROADS, a climate solutions simulator. It's as close as you can get to playing video games while still reporting! It's fun, but it's also useful: You can simulate climate solutions to research, fact-check or visualize data. Plus, the training is free and open to reporters and climate communicators of all experience levels. It's happening Oct. 6, so RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/gUEENFRk

#ICYMI - We were joined by the amazing Amy Westervelt to discuss how the interlocking web of public relations, think tanks, and university research funding by private actors and corporations have polluted the information ecosphere. Warping the truth is destroying reality and eroding democracy. Amy is an award-winning investigative climate journalist and the host of Drilled, a true-crime podcast about climate change. Her new book is Brought to You By: How Corporations Warped the Truth, Conned the Public, and Broke Democracy. Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gvPTYSi4

Hot off the presses! The University of South Carolina College of Information and Communications has won a grant from the Knight Foundation's Knight Cities Challenge. We'll be building Artificial Intelligence tools to help journalists cover city and county council meetings in South Carolina. Looking forward to working with my friend Robby Thomas and the team at WIS-TV to build and test these tools. Special thanks to my fellow faculty members who helped craft our application - Scott Parrott, Eric Robinson and Ehsan Mohammadi. Let's get to work to help local journalism prosper! A great experience taking SCRI's new interactive scenario exercise to Washington, DC for a live demonstration. The exercise explores what changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) mean for security, and how to respond. The range of possible futures above 1.5C is wide, which makes scenario exercising an important tool to navigate this uncertainty space. We view it as a promising method to build situational awareness of the security challenges of overshoot, and helping identify no-regrets options for managing them regardless of which futures come to pass. Thank you to Erin Sikorsky, Katherine Yusko, Noah Fritzhand and the team at The Center for Climate and Security for hosting us, along with a stellar group of US security experts and practitioners. It was great to continue the climate-security collaboration between SCRI and CCS! Thank you also to our wonderful partners at the UCL Climate Action Unit, who led the design and facilitation, and Green Futures Solutions (University of Exeter), who led the analysis and science This session was the first in a whole series of workshops, including in the UK, Austria, and Iceland. More to come on those.

"We learn how to ask questions. But listening is also a skill that we have to pick up." At #GMF26, we asked Ellen Heinrichs, Celine Isabelle Samson and Julia Krittian to reflect on one of journalism's biggest challenges: rebuilding trust. From listening more closely to audiences' needs and getting out of the newsroom to meet people where they are, their experiences show that trust starts with genuine human connection. Watch the video to hear their lessons from the field. 🎥

Excited to see that SB 1048 has been signed! The State Seal of Climate Literacy will give students the opportunity to complete courses in climate literacy and complete/present a climate literacy final experimental learning project. This will help tee up the next gen for early empowerment on environmental issues. And as one young woman said, "We're the ones growing up in this world..." It was such an honor to spend a couple of days with 38 climate journalists in Montana earlier this month as we explored better ways of telling stories and existential threats to the planet - and the news industry. We may not have solved everything but, as Brett Walton lays out in this great op-ed, we at least began asking the right questions! Thanks again to the Llewellyn Foundation and Outrider Foundation for helping us make this big brainstorm session a reality!
The news business, if you haven’t heard, is a mess. Against the worrisome backdrop of a steep drop in newsroom jobs, 38 climate and environment reporters gathered at Flathead Lake Biological Station, in Montana, in early October for two days of...

Going solo doesn't have to be mean working alone or giving up those juicy group projects that newsrooms, editors & readers love. These 5 climate journalists teamed up on a "pop-up" newsroom to produce separate but related stories on how the climate crisis is affecting housing. Neiman Labs has more: https://lnkd.in/gZDRwtdW
