“Training Completed” Does NOT Mean “Training Understood” In clinical research, we are very good at documenting training. SOP distributed. Training completed. Quiz passed. Training log signed. Status: COMPLETED. But here is the real question: Can the person actually apply what they have learned when it matters most? Completing training on informed consent doesn't guarantee that someone can identify a consent-related deviation. Reading an SOP on safety reporting doesn't ensure a team member knows when and how to escalate a safety concern. Knowing a procedure and applying it correctly are two different things. What should we do differently? - Move beyond read-and-sign. Critical procedures deserve more than a signature. - Test understanding. Use practical scenarios and case-based questions, not just attendance records. - Assess competence. Can a CRA identify critical findings? Can a coordinator follow the consent process correctly? - Link training to risk. Prioritise activities that directly affect participant safety, data integrity, and study quality. - Close the loop. Identify gaps, provide targeted training, reassess competence, and verify improvement. A question to the readers: When an auditor or inspector asks how you know your team is adequately trained, is your strongest evidence a completed training log—or demonstrable competence? Training records establish traceability. But records alone cannot demonstrate that learning translates into practice. Completion is a record. Competence is the outcome. In clinical research, training is not merely a compliance activity. It is part of our responsibility to protect participants, safeguard data integrity, and deliver quality. Perhaps it's time to ask not just, “Has everyone completed the training?” but “Can they apply what they've learned?” #ClinicalResearch #GCP #QualityAssurance #ClinicalOperations #PatientSafety #ClinTrek ClinTrek Research Pvt.
