More engineers should consider working in customer facing roles. I left "traditional" software engineering a few years ago to work with customers as a technical advisor. I teach customers how to use software that'll help improve their product and build better workflows so they can understand their customers with their data. Even though I'm not a "traditional" engineer anymore: I talk with engineers everyday, review code, help with implementation, troubleshoot technical issues, build queries and dashboards. I also talk them through strategy and how I can make their job easier by pushing forward their team's goals. As much as I loved traditional engineering, I love working with customers even more. And with traditional engineering changing so much, I think more engineers would be surprised at how rewarding it can be to be in a customer facing role! One of my teammates, Ryan McCrary, wrote about this on our blog on how working with customers has made him a better software engineer: https://lnkd.in/eZjZ-f2r If you're an engineer considering making the switch to a customer role, we're hiring at PostHog!

I can definitely vouch for the fact that working directly with customers has built me into a better engineer. There are things I think about that I don't think I otherwise would if I hadn't been in those shoes.
