Women Collectors Shape Culture in STELLA Report Edition 01

Renewed attention is only the beginning. What does it take to give overlooked women artists a lasting place in art history? In our new interview for Salient, Jane Adams discusses how Artemisia Gold, Inc brings together restoration, research and education to recover paintings and the histories surrounding them. Through the work of Artemisia Gentileschi, Plautilla Nelli and Plautilla Bricci, our conversation explores what physical evidence can reveal about an artist’s decisions, working methods and professional identity. It also considers how we read biographies written by others, and the influence of women who commissioned art. The market adds another question: could the rush to acquire works by women artists turn rediscovery into speculation? Jane insists that new attributions must earn their place through technical analysis, archival research and comparison with securely attributed works. Her ambition reaches beyond individual rediscoveries: a future in which these artists are fully integrated into exhibitions, scholarship and teaching, without being treated as perpetual exceptions. I really enjoyed speaking with Jane Adams for this new Salient interview - a conversation that connected closely with my own studies. Having spent a long time studying in Rome with Professor Raffaella Morselli, I was particularly happy to return to the subject of women artists. Her extensive work in this field, including the exhibition Roma Pittrice, which she co-curated at Palazzo Braschi, has been an important reference for me. Speaking with Jane Adams offered an opportunity to explore how these questions take shape through the restoration, research and education carried out by Artemisia Gold, Inc. What stayed with me was her emphasis on recovering the history around a painting: the artist’s working life, the women who commissioned it, and the community for which it was made. I also appreciated her insistence that enthusiasm for rediscovery must always be supported by evidence. Thank you, Jane, for such a thoughtful conversation. Preserving the art histories that deserve to be remembered. Lorraine Affourtit is a scholar of contemporary visual culture whose research explores the intersections of art, activism, and decolonial politics in the Americas, with a particular focus on Latin America. Research plays a vital role in recovering these stories, examining the gaps in the historical record, and preserving the experiences, creativity, and resilience of people whose voices have too often been overlooked. Through art, oral histories, and critical scholarship, researchers can help bring these histories into view and ensure they become part of our shared cultural understanding. Her latest article, “Haunting the Archives: Forced Migration and Afro-Latinx Resistance,” explores how contemporary artists recover histories of forced migration and resistance, bringing Afro-Latinx women's experiences into view through artistic practices that challenge historical silences. Her research is a powerful reminder that preserving history requires more than safeguarding what has already been recorded. It also requires the curiosity, dedication, and imagination to seek out what has been overlooked—and to recognize the significance of those stories for generations to come. I love a good art history rabbit hole, especially when it leads to women artists who were overlooked, misunderstood, or written out of the story. 🎨This article about nine Spiritualist women artists is a fascinating reminder that women were experimenting with abstraction long before the art history textbooks traditionally gave them credit for. Georgiana Houghton was creating wildly abstract watercolors in the 1860s. Hilma af Klint made paintings she believed audiences weren't ready to see. New research is bringing Anna Cassels' contributions to af Klint's work into sharper focus, raising important questions about collaboration and whose names get remembered. I'm especially interested in how Spiritualism offered some women a way to make work that fell outside the expectations placed on them. Framing their art as messages from spirits may even have permitted them to experiment in ways the art world wouldn't otherwise have accepted....And then there's Minnie Evans, whose extraordinary, intricate imagery grew out of her dreams and visions. Her story is a reminder of how much artistic knowledge and innovation can exist outside traditional art-world institutions. As someone who cares deeply about feminist art history, I keep coming back to this question: How many groundbreaking women artists are still waiting for us to look again? Recovering these stories isn't just about adding more women to the timeline. It's about rethinking the timeline itself, questioning the stories we've inherited, and recognizing how much richer art history becomes when we look beyond the usual names. The Asian Art Biennial is back for its tenth edition, promising a vibrant and inclusive reimagining of contemporary Asian art. Curated by Lu Pei-Yi and titled _Mrahul Tminun · 共織 · Co-Weaving_, this iteration unfolds across unexpected venues like outdoor spaces and corridors at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts from November to February. With over 30 artists participating, the biennial centers marginalized voices—highlighting women, indigenous communities, and queer perspectives. This focus reflects a growing trend within the art world to decenter dominant narratives and embrace diverse stories through innovative curatorial frameworks. Featuring a dynamic roster of artists and collectives—such as Mounira Al Solh, Sheba Chhachhi & Janet Price, Speedy Grandma, and Gudskul—the exhibition explores themes of identity, community, and collaboration.
