How does INTERPOL actually operate? 196 member countries. One database. No power to arrest. And yet the information it moves can upend a life in an afternoon. I set out the gap between what INTERPOL is and what INTERPOL does drawing on experience Rhys Davies and I have developed through International Human Rights Advisors.

What is an INTERPOL Red Notice? It is not an international arrest warrant, whatever you may have read. It is a request from one country to locate and arrest you with a view to extradition. Some countries treat it like a warrant anyway. Elsewhere it means blocked travel, a closed bank account, or extradition proceedings, and the damage to your name outlasts the notice. I have spent twenty years as an extradition barrister and INTERPOL Red Notice lawyer challenging them. In the second video of our International Human Rights Advisors series, Rhys Davies and I cover the fundamentals of the INTERPOL system, and here I explain what a Red Notice actually does.

How do you know if you are subject to an INTERPOL Red Notice or Diffusion? Often, you don't. Most Red Notices aren't public. Diffusions never are. A lot of people only find out at a border, in a hotel lobby, or in a detention cell. Ben Keith on the uncertainty at the heart of Interpol cases.

More in our series on Interpol, Red Notices and how to delete them. Today Ben Keith is in the hot seat, explaining the mechanics of the CCF.
Who decides whether to remove a Red Notice or Diffusion? Not a court. Not a judge. The CCF — Interpol's own oversight body. Confidential process, no oral hearing, no right of appeal. One shot to get it right. Ben Keith on the most important authority in any INTERPOL case.

How do you challenge a Red Notice or Diffusion? There is a route. It runs through Interpol's Commission for the Control of Files. It is slow, confidential, and unforgiving. There is no formal appeal. The first submission is usually the only one that matters. Ben Keith and I set up International Human Rights Advisors to take that first submission seriously. In this latest video, I explain why getting it right the first time is everything.

INTERPOL 's notice system is more than the interpol Red Notice that makes the headlines. Blue, Yellow, Green, Black — each carries its own purpose and its own consequences, and several can restrict movement or trigger scrutiny without any request for arrest. Rhys Davies sets out how the system works, and why it matters for anyone who travels or operates across borders. A precise, useful guide

This is the latest in our series about Red Notice and how to challenge them. In this video, we discuss the mechanics and the approach as to how to apply to Interpol’s CCF. As we say in the video, the process can be lengthy and it’s critical to make sure that submissions filed with the CCF are the best version that can possibly be submitted, as there is very limited scope to have a second bite of the cherry.

What is INTERPOL? Most people picture a global police force chasing criminals across borders. It isn't that. It's a data-sharing network between 196 countries — and the information it moves around can still get you arrested, detained, or turned away at a border. In our International Human Rights Advisors video series, Ben Keith and I cover the fundamentals of the Interpol system. To start the series off, I explain what Interpol actually is, and why it matters.

This is our latest video in a new series of posts about the mechanics and operation of Red Notices and diffusions. Both these mechanisms are very effective tools in international policing, but they can also have really significant adverse impacts on individuals who have been wrongly targeted.
What happens if you're subject to an INTERPOL Red Notice or Diffusion? In some places, it means arrest and extradition proceedings. But even where no arrest follows, the reputational, legal and commercial impact can be severe. For many clients, the disruption to movement and working life is the most immediate—and damaging—consequence. Watch as Rhys Davies explains what actually happens once the alert is live. Follow us for more, as we explain how to challenge a Red Notice or Diffusion in the weeks ahead.
