Today's field diary features sweep nets, beneficial insects and a hoverfly that clearly wasn't interested in being interviewed. Following our last video on monitoring for aphids, Kelly shows us how the team monitors beneficials, including hoverflies, whose larvae can help control aphids. There’s just one catch: finding a hoverfly is one thing. Getting it to stay put for a video is another! Luckily, protecting your beneficials doesn't have to be as tricky. The Beneficials Chemical Toxicity Table (link in comments) can help growers and advisers compare insecticides based on their toxicity to beneficial insects, and consider their impacts when making spray decisions. Watch the latest field diary to see how Kelly surveys for beneficials.

Drains are one of the most overlooked reservoirs for pathogen persistence in a facility — and one of the least tested. SteriDrain Pro is lab-tested to EN 13697 (up to 9.3 log reduction against bacteria, 8.0 log against mould and yeast, clean conditions) and EN 17126 (effective against C. difficile spores), and is now an NHS Supply Chain Lot 9 Higher Level Disinfectants awarded product alongside SANI-99 and SANI-FOAM. It's formulated specifically for drains and drainage points — not a general surface or hand disinfectant repurposed for the job.

Episode 22 of Mouthy Matters with Dr. Michelle Jorgensen also draws a distinction most people have never stopped to consider. Chlorine is added to water to treat the water itself, killing bacteria, keeping it sanitary. Fluoride is different. It's not treating the water at all. It's the one addition intended to treat the person drinking it. That's the shift worth sitting with. Every other additive in water serves the water. Fluoride serves the person, without anyone measuring how much of a person is drinking it, or how much they actually need. 💧🦷 This is exactly why conversations like this matter, because understanding the actual purpose behind something changes how you think about consuming it. A single positive E. coli sample put roughly 5,000 Lake City, MN residents under a boil-water advisory last week — followed by chlorination, flushing, and days of waiting on consecutive lab-confirmed negatives before the all-clear. That wait is the hidden cost of relying solely on scheduled culture testing. Distribution systems don't fail on a lab's timetable: regrowth in storage, main repairs, and sampling anomalies all call for frequent checks with fast answers. Rapid screening for total bacteria and E. coli — like AquaVial COLI100, which tests a full 100 mL drinking-water sample to catch the low counts that matter in potable supplies — helps utilities verify disinfection and shorten the window of uncertainty. Sample Submission Tips: Set Your Results Up for Success Accurate HAB toxin testing starts with proper sample collection. A few best practices to keep in mind before you send samples to the lab: ✅ Collect source material first. Water or algal scum helps identify the algae present and confirm toxin levels. ✅ Include clinical or necropsy specimens when possible. Many incidents involve multiple toxins or environmental stressors, so pairing source material with biological samples gives the most complete diagnostic picture. ✅ Keep samples cold or frozen, as specified. Sample integrity depends on proper storage from collection to shipment. ✅ Always include a completed Chain of Custody (COC) form. Every submission requires one to ensure traceability and accurate reporting. Proper collection and handling make the difference between a clear diagnosis and inconclusive results. Full sampling instructions (what to collect, how to store, and how to ship) are available on our website at greenwaterlab.com #HarmfulAlgalBlooms #LabTesting #SampleCollection #WaterQuality #AnimalHealth

Disinfectant applied over grease, feed residue, or biofilm doesn't work as well as the label says - because a meaningful fraction of it gets consumed neutralizing organic matter instead of killing pathogens. Cyclone is the step ahead of that: an enzyme-based cleaning concentrate, neutral pH, built to emulsify grease, feed residue, and biofilm before disinfection begins. Clean first. Disinfect second. Skipping the sequence is one of the more common gaps we see in an otherwise solid protocol. #Cyclone #FarmSanitation #Biosecurity #PoultryProducer #SwineProduction

Fall harvest is ramping up — is your facility ready? Biofilm doesn't take a season off. As packinghouses and processing facilities gear up for harvest, hard-to-kill pathogens like Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica can still be hiding in microbial harborage sites from the off-season. Sterilex's HIBRnate Biofilm Control Program resets your facility before production ramps back up — eliminating harborage niches and biofilm before they become a downtime problem during your busiest months. Don't let biofilm slow down your harvest season. https://lnkd.in/g8mbQauM #FoodSafety #Biofilm #ProduceIndustry #FoodProcessing #HarvestSeason #Sterilex

When it is time to inseminate, supply cannot fail. 🐖 For producers, it is not just about receiving a dose on time. It is about relying on a system that responds with continuity, security and confidence when it matters most. Because reliable supply does not start with delivery. It starts much earlier: with how the entire system behind it is designed, protected and managed: 🚚 Coordinated logistics 🛡️ Biosecurity 📋 Controlled processes 🔁 Operational continuity 🤝 Confidence for the farm In swine production, reliability is not a coincidence. It is the result of planning, discipline and commitment to every detail. A contamination problem rarely starts with the question, “Which disinfectant should we increase?” But that is often where the investigation ends up. What changed?Which batch was affected? Was it one variety or several?Did the contamination appear immediately, or only after several days? Was it associated with a particular operator, room, material, vessel, or stage of culture? And most importantly, can we document what we found and compare it with the next incident? I put together a Contamination Troubleshooting Card for exactly this purpose. It is a practical digital reference for investigating contamination in plant tissue culture laboratories. But I wanted it to do more than provide troubleshooting information. So I added editable investigation fields. You can enter the laboratory, date, crop, variety, batch, culture stage, observations, suspected source, tests performed, corrective action, and follow-up results directly into the document. Then save it as a record. When another contamination event happens, you can reuse the card and create another investigation record.Over time, those records can become useful in identifying patterns that are easy to miss when every contamination event is treated as an isolated incident.Because contamination troubleshooting should not just answer:“How do we get rid of this?”It should also answer:“Why did this happen, and can we prevent it from happening again?” The Contamination Troubleshooting Card is available for USD 8. Contamination troubleshooting can take a lot of time when there is no structured way to investigate the problem. It is easy to start changing sterilization concentrations, exposure times, media, or handling procedures before establishing where the contamination is actually coming from. That is why I put together this Contamination Troubleshooting Card.It gives you a structured checklist for root cause analysis of contamination, helping you work through the investigation systematically and document what you find. The goal is simple: spend less time guessing and more time finding the actual cause.I shared the card yesterday, but this is one part I wanted to highlight again because structured troubleshooting can save a lot of time in the lab.
