Most traders spend too much time asking:
“𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿?”
But the more important question is:
“𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗳 𝗜’𝗺 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴?”
That is where risk management begins.
In crypto, especially with futures and leverage, a good setup can still become a bad trade if the risk is poorly managed.
Here are 5 principles I believe matter more than chasing the perfect entry:
𝟭. 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴
Know how much of your capital you are willing to lose on the trade before you open it.
Not after the price moves against you.
𝟮. 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲
High leverage is not automatically the problem.
Oversized exposure is.
A properly sized position with a defined stop can be safer than a low-leverage trade with poor risk control.
𝟯. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲
Several “small-risk” trades can become one very large risk if they are highly correlated.
Always look at your total exposure.
𝟰. 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝘁
As a trade progresses, risk should usually reduce.
That can mean partial profit-taking, moving protection forward, or reducing exposure as key levels are reached.
𝟱. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺
Risk management is not about avoiding every loss.
It is about making sure no single trade, bad day, or unexpected market move can seriously damage the account.
For me, this is one of the biggest lessons from building and operating an automated trading system:
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲.
𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.
𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.
