A short checklist like this works best when it leads to a conversation. Preventive reviews for older adults catch falls, medication interactions and hearing or vision changes early, and getting the right specialist involved quickly is what keeps people independent.

What do the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards mean in everyday practice?

Introduced under the Aged Care Act 2024, the strengthened Standards establish clearer expectations for safe, accountable and person-centred aged care. The specific requirements that apply vary according to a provider’s registration category and the services it delivers.

In practice, quality care should include:

• Respect for dignity, rights and individual choice

• Services guided by assessed needs and personal goals

• Clear care plans and reliable documentation

• Appropriate risk management and role boundaries

• Feedback, review and continuous improvement

At O&N Healthcare, we connect these principles to respectful communication, personalised support and dependable service delivery that promotes comfort, independence and quality of life at home.

One of the less-discussed challenges of caregiving is the constant worry about a loved ones health, particularly when they are living with a chronic respiratory condition. For families managing asthma, COPD, or other breathing challenges, symptoms such as nighttime coughing and wheezing can add another layer of concern. As a health media personality focused on respiratory education and family caregiving, I believe technology can play a useful role in helping families recognize and document symptom patterns.Respire LYF is a respiratory health tracking app that helps users monitor cough patterns, respiratory symptoms, and environmental factors such as pollen and air quality. These insights may support more informed conversations with healthcare professionals and help families become more engaged in respiratory health management.Learn more about Respire.

Important Aged Care Update: Personal Care Changes from 1 October 2026

From 1 October 2026, an important change is coming to Australia’s Support at Home program.

For eligible participants, approved personal care services will be fully funded by the Australian Government, meaning participants will no longer be required to make a personal contribution towards these services.

Personal care can include support with:

Personal hygiene and showering
Dressing and grooming
Eating and drinking
Other approved personal care needs

There are, however, some important conditions. The personal care service must be included in the participant’s Support at Home plan, and the participant must have sufficient funding available in their budget.

The change applies to personal care services delivered from 1 October 2026. Services delivered before this date remain subject to the existing contribution arrangements.

For older people, families and care providers, understanding these changes will be important when planning and accessing support.

We’ve put together a detailed guide explaining the upcoming changes and what they may mean for people receiving aged care at home.

Good home care is about more than completing a checklist.

Help with personal care. Medication reminders. Meal preparation. Mobility support.

These are important parts of in-home care. But the quality of care is also shaped by something less tangible: how well we understand the person behind the care plan.

What makes someone feel comfortable accepting help? What routines matter to them? What helps them feel independent? When should a caregiver step in — and when should they give someone the space to do things for themselves?

As people age, maintaining independence isn't always about doing everything alone. Sometimes, it's about having the right support to continue living life on your own terms.

At Choice Homecare, we believe care should adapt to the individual, not the other way around.

That means listening to clients and families, respecting established routines, and recognizing that even small details can make a meaningful difference to someone's day.

Because the best care doesn't simply ask, “What does this person need help with?"
It also asks, “What matters most to this person?”

That is where personalized care begins.

What do you believe makes the biggest difference between good care and truly exceptional care?

Mobility support is most useful when it preserves participation.

Families can keep pathways clear, avoid rushing, and provide assistance that reflects the older adult’s abilities and professional guidance. New or significant changes in mobility should be discussed with the appropriate healthcare professional.

Ageing changes healthcare needs—but it should not take away a person’s voice in their own care.

As families become more involved in appointments, medicines, hospital visits and everyday support, one principle matters: older adults should remain informed, heard and involved wherever possible.

Supporting ageing well is not simply about providing more care. It is about helping people retain dignity, choice and independence for as long as possible.

The easier medications are to manage, the easier they are to remember.

For many older adults, taking medication isn't as simple as taking one pill at breakfast.

There may be different medications, different times, different doses, and different refill schedules.

For seniors managing multiple prescriptions, this can become confusing, especially when they are:
• Living alone
• Homebound
• Receiving home health care
• Living in a senior community
• Depending on family caregivers

A consistent medication routine can help reduce confusion and make daily care easier.

Simple organization can make a difference:
Know what you take.
Know when you take it.
Keep medications organized.
Stay ahead of refills.

Communicate with your healthcare team.

For family caregivers and healthcare professionals, helping seniors maintain an organized medication routine is an important part of supporting healthy aging.

At ProPack Pharmacy, we believe medication support should be clear, organized, and built around the everyday needs of Chicago seniors.

Because medication management should support independence, not make life more complicated.

Follow ProPack Pharmacy for practical senior health, medication safety, and caregiving resources for the Chicago community.
