Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that AI companies could help rebuild public confidence in their work through the process of independent auditing. Our Head of Public Affairs Mark Frankel is featured in an LBC article today on the risks deepfakes pose to democracy. As Mark explains: "These tools are producing false narratives and reshaping how audiences use and access information. "The public could be misled if there are videos of politicians saying things that they are not or introducing things they aren’t." That’s why we’re calling for the current Representation of the People Bill to include stronger rules to address political deepfakes and help protect the integrity of democratic debate. https://lnkd.in/e3v3uepS

On today's Reality Check podcast: Some whistleblowers from the AI industry claim there is a more than 10% chance that artificial intelligence could wipe out humanity within a few years. A group of mostly Labour MPs has written to Andy Burnham calling for action on existential AI risk, while conceding there is little the British government can do about it alone. Michael Simmons speaks to John Power about the incentives behind the warnings, whether AI can realistically be regulated and why more mundane harms, from AI-written complaints flooding bodies such as IPSO to hackers using chatbots, may deserve more attention. Earlier this year, Professor David Taylor-Robinson received an unexpected email from a colleague: “Are you aware you are on TikTok?” He wasn’t. He isn’t on TikTok. But an AI-generated deepfake of him was. A series of social media accounts have been using AI-generated deepfakes of real doctors and academics—including Professor Taylor-Robinson—to promote health products with bogus endorsements. The result is a growing wave of AI-driven misinformation that risks damaging the reputations of those it impersonates, and could lead to people making decisions about their health based on fake claims. When anybody with an internet connection can make videos showing any expert saying anything they want, could this be the beginning of a global struggle to keep track of who the real experts are? Our new investigation—published exclusively by The Guardian, uncovers the scale of the problem. https://lnkd.in/ePhA4jDJ
