▶️ WATCH: What looks like salmon and smells like salmon but doesn’t swim in the sea? Sounds like a riddle. Yet the answer is being served in US restaurants. Last month, we hosted the Breakfast of Tomorrow at #ClimateWeekNYC, where Madre Brava’s Rebecca P. and Greener by Default's Ilana Braverman tasted Wildtype cultivated salmon for the first time 🐟 As well as giving our guests the opportunity to taste the future of protein, we discussed the plant-rich food innovations that are making a difference right now – namely balanced meat products, which have enjoyed early success in US food service. By blending conventional meat with plants, like veg, mushrooms and pea protein, balanced products are bringing more plants to peoples’ dinner plates. As Lidl GB said last month, they’re part of what makes the transition to the Planetary Health Diet seamless, providing folks with the foods they love to eat, just in a healthier, more sustainable way. As for cultivated salmon, it’ll be interesting to see what seafood lovers think. Clearly, Rebecca and Ilana are hooked 🎣

This year’s World Food Day theme is “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow”. I worry that in our push for innovation, we continue to overlook important actors that are nourishing today and can continue to nourish tomorrow. I’ve worked on urban food security for almost 20 years and seen how in cities and towns around the world street food vendors and traditional and informal markets are utterly central to food security and nutrition. I have also seen how these actors are often viewed as untidy, unsafe, out of place and replaceable. And yet, without street food vendors, and traditional and informal markets, food would be unaffordable, non-nutritious, and culturally inappropriate for the vast majority of the world's urban inhabitants. That is, the majority of people. Without these traders, local small scale producers and processors would struggle to sell their produce. Achieving sustainable, resilient and just food systems relies on protecting, sustaining and enabling these markets and vendors. That requires supportive governance and policies, strategic investment in infrastructure, and incentives to keep them alive. I worry that in our push for innovation, we continue to overlook important actors that are nourishing today – but whose ability to nourish tomorrow may be under threat. #FixingFood #WorldFoodDay (for more on the importance of informal sector food actors see this great coverage of a just about to be out paper in Food Polciy I co-authored, led by the wonderful Ramya Ambikapathi: https://lnkd.in/dXJEBMjn)

This drives me crazy as well as many others sustaining food systems. There is already amazing innovation that gets completely overlooked, even quashed. Those in power - people with money or people in positions who manage our money - are the ones who need put their innovation heads and hearts on. People working sustainably get almost zero attention and funding. Let’s change that. Afshan Omar did you see this?

I loved travelling to places like Ennistymon, Portadown, Belfast, Cork with my M-CO colleagues and our friend and collaborator Steve Doogan to help facilitate community workshops on how we interact with food in the world around us. From supermarkets, restaurants, markets, petrol stations, corner shops, delivery services and more, systems and environments have so much impact on the choices we make. Great to see Safefood doing this work and I look forward to see the impact it has on policy in the future. The full Appetite for Change report is here: https://lnkd.in/eV63PC5s
What if the food that's best for us was also best for the planet? Safe food and sustainable food belong together, and safer food systems don't happen by chance. They are shaped by evidence, policy, collaboration and the environments we create around us. The food choices we make don't happen in isolation, or simply through good intentions. Creating healthier communities isn't just about individual willpower: it's about designing food systems that make safe, nutritious choices the easy choices. These ideas have sat at the heart of our work with Safefood over the past few years. From supporting the Healthy Food Environment Roadmap and exploring how policy can shape healthier choices, to leading citizen engagement for Safefood's Appetite for Change campaign, we've brought together real people, real neighbourhoods and real conversations about the environments that influence how we eat. Safer food systems depend on supportive environments and everyday behaviours, but they also rely on turning evidence into action. When communities, policymakers and organisations work together, we can move from burden to solutions, creating a future where safe, healthy food is achievable for everyone. World Food Day On World Food Day, we are reminded that access to adequate, safe, nutritious, and healthy food is a fundamental human right that must be guaranteed for everyone. Small-scale producers play a vital role in our food systems. It is therefore essential to create fair and inclusive market conditions that provide them with opportunities, ensure decent incomes, and improve their quality of life, while also guaranteeing consumers access to healthy, nutritious, and affordable food. Ensuring the right to food requires the commitment of everyone: producers, consumers, civil society organizations, the private sector, and, above all, the State as the primary duty-bearer. Having laws and public policies in place is not enough; they must be translated into concrete actions, effective monitoring mechanisms, and accountability systems that ensure their implementation and continuity over time. A fair and sustainable food system is one that recognizes and respects everyone's rights, protects those who produce our food, and ensures that no one is left behind. The right to food must not remain just words on paper; it must become a reality in everyone's life, every day. #WorldFoodDay #RightToFood #FoodSecurity #SmallScaleProducers #SustainableFoodSystems #HealthyDiets #HumanRights #LivingIncome #InclusiveMarkets #LeaveNoOneBehind

We’ve just launched fromearth.co: a new kind of online platform delivering extraordinary, nutrient-rich British foods from more than 30 regenerative British farms. Available to order anywhere in the UK. Ultra-processed food has become the norm in the UK, British growers are being squeezed out, and most of us have lost touch with real, seasonal food. We think food should be about two simple things: nourishment and connection. The from earth ecosystem curates 100+ incredible British foods, showing not just where it was grown, but the farm and growers by name and their story. It's complete traceability. It's a place to rediscover forgotten varieties and learn what your body actually needs (not what a big shop wants you to buy!) Offices & small teams: We're running a pilot delivering real, seasonal British food to offices and small teams across the UK. Something really cool: nutritious foods, sourced from independent British growers, delivered to your door. Get in touch to join the pilot. Foodies: Our new shop includes brilliant varieties of seasonal fruit & veg you won’t see elsewhere alongside the most nutrient-rich foods you can buy. More stock coming soon so stay tuned! Food producers: We're always looking for independent UK food producers creating nutritionally rich food and drink. If you want to reach a nutrient-conscious audience who truly care about the story behind the product, come say hi! Investors & partners: We're at pre-seed stage and happy to chat with anyone who might want to join us on this journey. Thank you to everyone who has helped us get here. There’s lots more to come! Try out here: fromearth.co Dominic Farr, Linsay Duncan, Chris Mitchell, Paul Foulkes-Arellano, Oscar Rodriguez FRSA, Alan Stewart 📸 @eveartnfilm

Food access can be a powerful foundation for better health, especially when it is connected to the broader care journey. Helping people access nutritious food while also making preventive screenings, care programs, telehealth, and in home services easier to navigate can address both immediate needs and longer term health goals. The greatest impact comes when community resources and healthcare work together around the whole person.
