I'm excited to announce our work on MentalHealthBench, a new open benchmark developed with mental health experts to evaluate how Al models respond in realistic mental health conversations.
Millions of people use Al for personal support, from navigating everyday relationships to seeking help in times of acute crisis. MentalHealthBench is designed to more faithfully represent the diverse ways in which these conversations happen.
The benchmark is made in collaboration with 80+ licensed psychiatrists and psychologists from across the world. It assesses important behaviors like safety, seeking context, preserving user agency, and providing actionable guidance when appropriate.
We're releasing it so researchers can evaluate their own models, build on the work, and help drive progress towards Al that supports human flourishing.
Really grateful to have worked on this with some amazing collaborators at OpenAI, especially Declan Grabb, MD and Karan Singhal.
Special thanks to all the mental health clinicians who dedicated their time and expertise to making this a reality.

We’re demonstrating how frontier models have continued to improve in realistic mental health conversations with MentalHealthBench.
This new open benchmark was built with input from more than 80 mental health clinicians.
We’re releasing it openly so other researchers can examine the methods, run their own evaluations, and build on the work.
