“Through our work, we were able to complete work in 8 hours that previously took more than 1,600 manhours to accomplish.” That’s Gary R. Baumbeck, Jr., Electronics Engineering Technician at Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) EXWC, on a pre-dry-dock inspection of USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). Norfolk Naval Shipyard and NAVFAC EXWC flew the carrier’s exterior to find defects and major rust before it entered dry dock. Inspectors used to rely on scaffolding, barges, and binoculars from the pier. The drone reached areas those methods couldn’t see. Worth reading the Navy's own write-up linked here. It names the pilot (Gary Baumbeck, NAVFAC EXWC), the NNSY engineers, and the inspectors who called the shots. It doesn't name the aircraft or the vendor. The 1,600 hours saved is scaffolding, barges, and binoculars. The innovation on that pier was the operators. Wrote up the longer version on my profile.
