Child marriage can take away choices that should belong to girls. It can force them out of school, increase the risk of early pregnancy and limit their opportunities. Every girl has the right to learn, make decisions and have her voice heard in her community. #EndChildMarriage. Invest in girls’ rights. Now. #GirlGoals

  • Each year, more than 12 million girls are married before the age of 18.

That’s one girl every three seconds.
  • Ken, 16, holds her baby at home in Ratanakiri, Cambodia, where nearly half of all girls are married before age 18.

UNICEF and partners are helping young mothers like her get the care and protection they need.

For many girls, child marriage means growing up too soon, facing early pregnancy and leaving school before they can choose what comes next.

Child marriage robs girls of their childhood, limits their education, and can expose them to early pregnancy and serious health risks. Every girl deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, make informed decisions, and determine her own future without fear or coercion. Protecting girls requires stronger communities, access to education and healthcare, and an end to harmful practices that deny them their rights. Every girl deserves a childhood, a voice, and the freedom to choose her future.

One girl every three seconds is wild yet, I believe it's possible for every of these girls to be protected. Provisions should be made not just for further advicacies but further implementations and protection actions.

Our final-year ObGyn practical exam. I had a case of a 17-year-old pregnant girl with gestational diabetes, dressed in a sari. Really cute and pretty girl. Her husband, who was himself young, had gone far away to earn a living. While interacting I had the thought the back of my mind - At an age when she should dance, sing, or pick up hobbies, she was made to do that. Poverty, seeing its worst form. Does something that's beyond the scope of us all - It kills hope.

Ending child marriage means protecting girls' right to learn, choose, and be heard. Investing in girls' rights now is one of the most powerful ways to build a more equal future.

This is sad. Every girl child deserves to experience all the amazing stages of life and make their own decisions concerning marriage and life. This is such an impactful initiative by UNICEF.

Child marriage is not merely a social custom or a legal loophole; it is a systematic assassination of childhood and an abortion of full potentials that could have made a difference in our societies. When we force a little girl to carry a child before she has even stopped carrying her doll, we are destroying an entire generation of mothers, thinkers, and future leaders. Protecting a girl's right to education and decision-making is the true benchmark of any human society's progress.
