Milena, 4, is back in the classroom thanks to a UNICEF-supported shelter in her kindergarten in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Because of the war, safe shelters like this offer a sense of protection and help children learn and play. Hear from parents and teachers firsthand.

A four year old shouldn't have to know what a shelter is but Milena does and she's back in her classroom because someone built one. What stays with me is how small the victory looks from the outside a child sitting with other children, learning, playing, being loud in a way only four-year-olds can be. Yet for her mother that ordinary scene is everything. War takes so much from children, but we don't have to let it take their childhood too. Protection isn't only about walls and safety. It's about giving a child the chance to be a child again. Sometimes hope looks like a small room with bright walls and a kid who gets to go back to class.

A girl returning to class in the middle of a war shows why education must be part of humanitarian responses from the outset. Safe spaces to learn and play help children regain a routine and reconnect with their peers. Sustaining these spaces requires funding, support for teachers, and a lasting commitment to protecting children.

Amazing how you have failed to protect children in Gaza😭😭😭

So heartwarming to see 4 year old Milena back in the classroom safely! Safe learning environments make a world of difference for children in conflict zones. Thank you UNICEF for this essential work
