Young ICCA’s Post

On 10 June 2026, Young ICCA co-organized “The Art of Oral Advocacy” with the Department of Law of Roma Tre University, with the support of the Roma Tre - UNIDROIT Centre for Transnational Commercial Law and International Arbitration. The workshop took place as an official side event of #ItalianArbitrationDay (#IAD). Following introductory remarks by Katrine Ritto Tvede and Carlo de Stefano, Benedetta Mauro presented the case study: whether an arbitral tribunal should order the disclosure of a third-party funding agreement and an after-the-event insurance agreement. Nicole Knebel and Veronika Timofeeva presented the parties’ submissions before a tribunal composed of Carolyn Lamm, Maria-Chiara Malaguti and Daniel Durante. The mock hearing explored the balance between procedural transparency, confidentiality, costs considerations and the protection of commercially sensitive information. Eva Paloma Treves then moderated a discussion on effective oral advocacy. Key takeaways included the importance of: • answering tribunal questions directly before elaborating; • protecting counsel’s credibility by conceding points that cannot reasonably be contested; • listening actively without allowing the opposing party to control the narrative; • adapting submissions to the tribunal’s composition and reactions; and • keeping the underlying purpose of the applicable rules in view. The combination of a realistic mock hearing, structured feedback and open discussion offered participants practical insight into the preparation and delivery of persuasive oral submissions in #InternationalArbitration. 👉 The full report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dBkQQ3jn. A big thank you to the Department of Law of Roma Tre University and the Roma Tre-UNIDROIT Center for their invaluable support, and to Elisabetta Orsini for capturing the workshop’s discussions and key takeaways.
