Rain, limited visibility, and heavy traffic are common in Miami. ☔️ Our robotaxi doesn't have windshield wipers. It doesn't need them! Cameras, lidar, radar, and long-wave infrared help it navigate complex environments and changing weather to safely complete the mission. #ThisIsZoox #CodeToRoad #AutonomousVehicles #Robotaxi
Cameras and lidar handle perception — but knowing exactly where the vehicle is in the world requires centimeter-level positioning. RTK infrastructure is the other half of the equation. 📡
Different sensor technologies can work together to address situations that pose challenges to human drivers. I'm curious to see how this system will perform in heavy rain and complex traffic conditions over time
Allow me do a research where we ask commuters/passengers about their need for visual clarity in scenerios as these.
If you would like to validate individual sensor degradation in real weather conditions, we have just the right test station for that: https://www.persival.de/measurements/weather-measurements
Great advancements! When I was there, autonomy would have to be disabled when there was rain or even a puddle!
Congrats on the exemptions -- hopefully a precedent for robust common-sense AV regulations going forward.
Impressive design choice. The real test will be maintaining reliable sensor visibility and performance in heavy rain, road spray, and long-term real-world operation.
