I’m honored to have traveled to Singapore International Cyber Week as part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce delegation last week. We participated in over 15 bilateral engagements from which the following observations stuck with me: - Migration to post-quantum cryptography algorithms varies. Many discussions acknowledged the lack of practical guidance or a compelling business case. The Aspen Digital Preparing for Q-Day project seeks to address this gap directly. - National authorities to direct cybersecurity risk mitigation actions within critical infrastructure entities are diverse. The balance between incentives, voluntary signals, and government intervention surfaced frequently during meetings. - AI exposes organizational technical debt and imperfections, but not all partners have frontier AI model access. Mixing tools, commercially available or open-weight models, and harnesses is a necessity for many partners. Several governments have developed or are drafting AI cybersecurity frameworks. - There was a noticeable emphasis on resilience and preparing to operate minimum viable services offline for several months. - A consensus strategic approach emerged across conversations that combines fundamental practices (cyber hygiene), using AI in security operations, and improving resilience (aka “brace for impact”). However, if it’s more complicated for people to be secure or security does not provide a clear market advantage, people and organizations won’t pursue it consistently. - Addressing cybersecurity regulatory fragmentation is a priority area for international cooperation. I look forward to strengthening our global partnerships from this past week and integrating these important conversations into our Aspen Digital Cybersecurity Program.
