https://www.liveinternet.ru/community/742456/post79246713/

Nordic Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies (www.norsgender.org)
PhD course
Postcolonial feminist theories and analytical approaches

Date:
September 30 - October 2, 2008

Deadline for application: August 15, 2008

Venue: Roskilde University, Denmark

Teachers: Prof. Meyda Yegenoglu, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and Columbia University, New York Dr. Diana Mulinari, Lund University, Sweden Assoc. Prof. Signe Arnfred, The Nordic Africa Institute, Sweden; Roskilde
University, Denmark Assoc. Prof. Bodil Folke Frederiksen, Roskilde University, Denmark

Course description:
Over the last few decades postcolonial feminist theorizing has contributed
decisively to feminist thinking, critically pointing to the implicit and
invisible whiteness of Western feminisms.

Postcolonial feminists have illuminated the complex and fractured ways in
which the doings of gender and sexuality are at the core of nationalisms,
colonialisms and racisms, and central to politics of war and militarization.

From postcolonial feminist positions new questions have been raised, for
instance regarding foundational feminist concepts like 'women', 'gender' and the male/female duality. To which extent are such concepts universally applicable, to which extent do they actually hide as much as they reveal?
Postcolonial feminist theorizing invites to a thorough re-thinking of well-known conceptualizations. By de- centering the center (as put in the title of a volume edited by Sandra Harding and Uma Narayan) postcolonial feminist thinking offers a series of new vantage points from where to see and grasp the world, including one self and immediate surroundings. Being inspired by feminist standpoint theory as well as by post-structuralism, strands of post-colonial feminist thinking merge the two in new and unexpected ways.

The course will introduce and explore different lines of postcolonial feminist thinking in cross-disciplinary contexts - from sociology and anthropology to cultural and development studies - applied to a diversity of empirical fields, such as dressing and other bodily practices, sexuality and motherhood, gendered racisms, European identities and processes of globalization.

Programme and literature: www.norsgender.org/main.asp?page=course_programme&mode=single&id=24

Grants
16 PhD students can be funded by NorFA/NordForsk.
4 more PhD students are welcome to participate on a self-paying basis.
If the number of applicants, qualifying for the NorFA grants exceeds 16, a
selection will be made to ensure a spread of nationalities, institutions and
disciplines.

Applications
Applications (in English) should be mailed no later than August 15, 2008, to
academic coordinator Mette Bryld: mbry@galnet.dk

See www.norsgender.org/main.asp?page=application for information on application.

  8th Annual Aleksanteri Conference
WELFARE, GENDER AND AGENCY IN RUSSIA AND EASTERN EUROPE
December 10-12, 2008; the University of Helsinki, Finland

Aleksanteri Conference 2008
Time and venue: December 10-12, 2008, University of Helsinki , Finland
Organiser: The Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki
Co-organiser: The National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health (STAKES)

The Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki will hold the 8th Annual International Aleksanteri Conference, December 10-12, 2008. The conference will bring together researchers of society, culture and history to examine the interrelationships of welfare, gender and agency in Russia and Eastern Europe during the transitional period. The approach is more multidimensional than usual, because in addition to economic and social problems the agenda also includes bodily and sexual issues. They are viewed from an inter-sectionalist perspective, taking into account gender and, moreover, class and ethnicity. The integrating theme is discussion on post-socialist welfare models.

The conference will also deal with methodology - moving within the frames of the past, the present and the future; in-between macro and micro levels; and de/reconstructing East/West divisions, hierarchies and biases e.g. through post-colonially inspired post-socialist criticism.

Keynote speakers

*Professor Linda J. To what degree do they reflect new neo-liberal vs. past state-paternalistic values and goals? What kind of alternative models are there? What significance is given to current deep social divisions and poverty?

Regional and sub-regional variations

What kind of developmental differences are there between, on the one hand, Russia and CIS countries and, on the other hand, the new members and applicant states of the EU? How large are regional differences internally?

Gender

How are models gendered economically and socially? What insights do violence against women, prostitution and trafficking in women offer into the models? What kinds of masculinities are constructed? What are the future prospects for men who, statistically speaking, have a very low life expectancy today?

Ethnicity and migration

What is the situation of different cultural minorities such as the Romani people? How is East-West migration related to welfare in Eastern Europe ?

Civil society and agency

What is the relationship between political power institutions and civil society, and society at large? How is the sphere of civil society gendered? How do practices and agency take shape at the grassroots level?

Welfare services

What is the division between the public and third sectors in welfare service
provision? How common are so-called public-private or public-civic mix solutions? How, for example, are the life situations of clients of social work perceived? Who is responsible for the interpretations and on what terms?

National policies and transnational perspectives

How do policies on the national level shape new models? What do, for example, general and gender-sensitive development indexes tell about them?
How is welfare approached in multinational and transnational Western programmes aimed at the region?

In addition to plenum sessions, there will be panels and workshops gathered on a call-for-papers basis. Standard panel proposals should consist of a chair, three papers and a discussant; standard workshop proposals of three papers. Individual proposals for workshop papers are welcome as well.

All submissions should be in the working languages of the conference, which are English and Russian. With the
stroke of a pen, this new concept of the Lithuanian family would relegate
other family forms-single mothers and fathers raising children, unmarried
partners raising children, and grandparents caring for their
grandchildren-to second-class status.
Demographic analysis demonstrates that the structure of the Lithuanian
family is changing. In 2005, almost a third of all children were born to
unmarried parents living as partners. The same year, the number of divorces
per 100 marriages hit 56. This is evidence of the growing number of single
parents, who in 98 percent of cases are women. Until recently, high
unemployment in Lithuania also encouraged migration, and half of all workers
who emigrated in 2005 were married men or women. As a result a new family
structure-the long-distance family-emerged. A poll conducted in 2006 showed
that all these different family forms are considered as families by a
majority of Lithuanians. However, the new concept of family would have
practical implications, as it could ostensibly be used to prevent
nontraditional families from receiving the same level of government
assistance and from benefiting from government programs meant to support and
strengthen the family.

This bill, the first of its kind in Europe, has been applauded as a
breakthrough by the Catholic Church and conservative politicians. While
today this situation is confined to Lithuania, it could only be a matter of
time before other European countries become receptive to such simple-minded
and seemingly harmless, yet erroneous and discriminatory, attempts to
destroy families under the guise of strengthening them.

The situation is critical, and domestic groups are increasingly being
sidelined from the discussion. Therefore, we ask you today to urgently
communicate with Lithuanian government and Parliament officials to express
your concern about the State Family Political Concept bill currently under
debate in the Parliament and to remind the government of its commitment-made
domestically and internationally-to protect women, children and families in
all forms.

Attached we suggest some language for your letter. Please feel free to
incorporate any of these paragraphs or your own thoughts in your message and
send letters to:
. Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament Ceslovas Jursenas
ADDRESS: Ceslovas.Jursenas@lrs.lt
. Moreover, the warning signals from the Parliament to prohibit legal abortion in Lithuania make us express our concerns about violation of women's rights and freedoms.
The Republic of Lithuania―in ratifying the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, the E.U. Convention on Human Rights, and E.U. Social Rights Charter―assumed a duty with the international community to protect children and women against discrimination, regardless of their social situation and status and to protect families, regardless of marital status of the family members.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child establishes that Lithuania must guarantee the same rights for every child, forbid discrimination on any grounds, and use every means necessary to ensure that children will be protected from discrimination or punishment stemming from their parents' or families' status, activities, opinions or beliefs. Moreover, the European Social Charter establishes that the Lithuanian government has the responsibility to provide social protection and other support to families. This duty to defend the family also includes the duty to defend families that are not based on the traditional family structure of a married man and woman. The European Council has explicitly stated that the Charter encompasses a wide concept of family, one which includes single parents and other individuals living together
A democratic state must enact policies that guarantee each citizen's welfare and that respect every citizen's rights to privacy. Government assistance cannot be applied selectively, privileging only one type of family group, as this goes against all democratic principles and reinforces discrimination and social exclusion. Creating a privileged family structure based on a married man and woman would undermine a number of national laws as well international treaties to which Lithuania is party..
Therefore, we write you today to ask you to vote against this punitive and discriminatory law, as approval of this law by the Parliament would severely infringe upon human rights, freedom and democratic values in Lithuania.
Name, signature

Postfeminism and the Future(s) of Feminist Film and Media Studies

https://www.liveinternet.ru/community/742456/post77167475/

Location: Massachusetts, United States
Call for Papers Deadline: 2008-09-15

Postfeminism and the Future(s) of Feminist Film and Media Studies

40th Anniversary Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)
Feb. 26-March 1, 2009
Hyatt Regency-Boston, Massachusetts

Postfeminism (approximately 1981-present) is increasingly visible as a theoretical platform. Recent scholarship has been devoted to the influence of postfeminism upon popular culture, film and media studies, such as Yvonne Tasker and Diane Negra's Interrogating Postfeminism (2007). In a recent issue of Cinema Journal (vol. 44, no. 2, winter 2005), Tasker and Negra ask, "how do we address and make sense of a postfeminist media culture that repeatedly and loudly insists that feminism is no longer relevant because it has somehow succeeded? Second, how might our scholarship be updated so as to retain the strength and political commitment associated with earlier traditions of feminist writing and filmmaking?" (Tasker and Negra, "In Focus: Postfeminism and Contemporary Media Studies," p. 108)
This panel, in the Women's Studies and Film sections of the 2009 NeMLA convention, seeks to address these as well as other questions raised by the advent of postfeminism for film and media studies. Does postfeminism ring the death knell of feminist film and media theory, especially since according to Tasker and Negra, "we find ourselves at a moment when+conventional feminist critiques are in real danger of irrelevance" (109)? Does postfeminist film and media undo, deny and/or further feminist film and media theory? This panel welcomes papers about all aspects of postfeminism in film and media studies (including cinema, television, visual art, gaming, blogging, popular culture studies, new media, etc.) as well as literature. We are especially interested in papers that engage the feminist/postfeminist debate and attempt to bridge that divide.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:
-performances of gender and/or race in recent postfeminist film (i.e. "The Hot Chick"; "White Chicks")
-postfeminist directors, writers, artists, bloggers, etc.
-postfeminist representations of "career" women
-postfeminist "retreatism" (to cite Tasker and Negra's term, p. 109) in film, literature, television (i.e. "Knocked Up"; "13 Going on 30")
-postfeminism and "slacker" culture
-postfeminist portrayals of female adolescents/young adults (i.e. "Mean Girls"; "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen"; "Juno"; "The Virgin Suicides"; "Uptown Girls"; "Gossip Girl"; "Veronica Mars")
-postfeminism and pop culture
-postfeminism and "third wave" feminism
-postfeminism and cultural studies
- postfeminist costume/historical drama
-postfeminism and reality television (i.e. "The Real Housewives of Orange County"; "The Real Housewives of New York City"; "The Millionaire Matchmaker"; "America's Next Top Model"; "America's Next Prom Queen"; "The Simple Life"; "Bridezillas"; "The Hills"; "The Bachelorette")
-postfeminism and spectatorship studies (i.e. the "guilty" and/or "girly" pleasures produced by postfeminist film, television, etc.)
-postfeminist horror, sci-fi, and thrillers
-postfeminist representations of female police officers/lawyers, particularly on television (i.e. "The Closer"; "Saving Grace"; "Damages"; "Ally McBeal")
-postfeminist blogs/blogging
-postfeminist literature (i.e. fiction; self-help; advice)

Please send 250-500 word abstracts by September 15, 2008, to Marcelline Block, mblock@princeton.edu.

Please include with your abstract:

Name and Affiliation
Brief (1 page) CV
Email Address
Postal Address
Telephone number
A/V requirements (if any; $10 media fee)

The complete call for papers for the 2009 convention will be posted in June: www.nemla.org
Interested participants may submit abstracts to more than one NeMLA panel; however, panelists can only present one paper. Convention participants may present a paper at a panel or seminar and also present at a creative session or participate in a roundtable.
Marcelline Block
Princeton University
Dept. of French and Italian
305 East Pyne Hall
Princeton, NJ 08540

Email: mblock@princeton.edu
Visit the website at http://www.nemla.org
