The trend famously started with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/the-beatles\/\"><strong>The Beatles<\/strong><\/a>. A brief acoustic piece by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/paul-mccartney-and-wings\/\"><strong>Paul McCartney<\/strong><\/a> didn\u2019t fit on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/stories\/beatles-abbey-road-streets-ahead-time\/\"><strong>Abbey Road<\/strong> <\/a>and he ordered engineer Geoff Emerick to cut it. But Emerick had other ideas and he tacked it onto the end of the album after a few seconds of silence. The first \u201chidden track\u201d was born.<\/p>\n<p>The trend would continue throughout the decades, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/the-clash\/\"><strong>The Clash<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s \u201cTrain in Vain,\u201d from their 1979 album, <em>London Calling<\/em>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/pink-floyd\/\"><strong>Pink Floyd<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/slayer\/\"><strong>Slayer<\/strong><\/a> using audio reversal or \u201cbackmasking\u201d to play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/stories\/the-devil-is-in-the-detail\/\"><strong>secret messages<\/strong><\/a>. But it was really in the 90s when the trend took off, thanks to the technological loopholes that CDs created. Some bands used hidden tracks to include songs that didn\u2019t quite fit on an album, while others used them to toy with listeners and their labels alike.<\/p>\n<h2>The Best Hidden Tracks<\/h2>\n<h3>Nirvana: Endless, Nameless (<em>Nevermind<\/em>, 1991)<\/h3>\n<p>Less of a song and more a chaotic jam session, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/nirvana\/\"><strong>Nirvana<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s \u201cEndless, Nameless\u201d is one of the most cited examples of hidden tracks. Case in point: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/artist\/nine-inch-nails\/\"><strong>Nine Inch Nails<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 <em>Broken<\/em> LP, which came equipped with a bonus 3\u201d mini-CD featuring Trent Reznor covering Adam And The Ants\u2019 \u201cPhysical (You\u2019re So)\u201d and \u201cSuck\u201d by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/stories\/beginners-guide-to-industrial-music\/\"><strong>industrial<\/strong><\/a> supergroup Pigface (which Reznor was a former member of).
