Purchase options and add-ons

With a highly applied and computational focus, this book combines the important underlying theory with examples from electrical engineering, computer science, physics, biology and economics. An expanded list of computer codes in an appendix and more computer-solvable exercises in the text reflect Strang's interest in computational linear algebra. Many exercises appear in the sections and in the chapter reviews. Exercises are simple but instructive.

Gilbert Strang's Linear Algebra and Its Applications gives both an intuitive feel to linear algebra and the geometry that accompanies most linear algebra ideas in two or three dimensions, which can then be generalized to n dimensions. Strang provides a multitude of examples of each idea and a great set of exercises for the reader to try. Each subsection of each chapter is a stand-alone lesson that can help just about any linear algebra student. I really enjoyed this textbook.

A classic, and it's easy to see why. One of the few math books that one can learn from simply by reading the book carefully, without an instructor.

The objective is understanding, not rigor. If you prefer theorem, lemma, and proof, this is not the book for you.

I had the opportunity to learn linear algebra from Prof. Strang's online video lectures at MIT. This book will be a good comapanion to those lectures.

All of you who hate Linear Algebra should take it from me : Watch the lectures along with the book, you will do no wrong. Strang's insights as he lectures, will make you fall in love with Linear Algebra.

    Lacking Theory

This book is very odd in its presentation. I think the main problem is the title: Strang markets this as a linear algebra book when it's more so a book on elementary matrix theory. A book on linear algebra would focus on linear transformations, after all the only reason why we care about matrices is precisely because they represent linear transformations. But Strang hardly talks of linear transformations at all! This is reason enough to not get the book as there is no short supply of linear algebra texts out there.
