A non-profit that builds software & initiatives to strengthen global journalism, digital literacy & info accessibility
About us
Meedan is a global technology nonprofit that builds software and programmatic initiatives to strengthen journalism, digital literacy, and accessibility of information online and off. We develop open source tools for creating and sharing context on digital media through annotation, verification, archiving, and translation. We work with technologists, newsrooms, fact-checkers, public health professionals, nongovernmental organizations, and academic institutions on award-winning projects from election monitoring to pandemic response to human rights documentation. This work supports our vision of a more equitable internet. Our primary product is Check, a tool for collaboratively verifying and fact-checking online content. It combines smart checklists, workflow integrations, and intuitive design to make digital newsgathering an efficient and collaborative process. Check Global augments Meedan’s existing suite of open source tools and open licensed online and offline training to support emerging practices in digital media literacy skills, fact-checking, disinformation monitoring and evaluation, and media literacy skills-building for social impact. Meedan's Digital Health Lab works on information equity as a public health issue. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the lab brought together a team of scientists to form Health Desk, a team tasked with supporting fact-checking organizations and journalists reporting on health misinformation about COVID-19. It launched on April 15, 2021, and as of October 12, 2021, more than 1.5 million people have visited the site. We also co-founded the Credibility Coalition, an initiative to develop web standards for third party credibility indicators.

Meedan Executive Director Dima Saber and Research Director Scott Hale are in Oxford this week speaking at the Christchurch Call Action Forum! We’re proud of our longstanding partnership with Christchurch Call Foundation, which has been a crucial engine of the collective struggle to make the internet a safer and more welcoming place for everyone. If you’re in town, find them and say hello!
Day one of the Christchurch Call Action Forum is underway at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford. Ministers, online service providers, regulators, researchers, and civil society colleagues are working on the same question in the same room: where along the pathways between online misogyny and violent extremism can interventions be made, which of them travel between contexts, and which can scale. A good deal of the evidence being discussed today did not exist two years ago. It exists because colleagues at the ISD (Institute for Strategic Dialogue), Meedan, Search for Common Ground, Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab (PERIL), and Equimundo: Center for Masculinities and Social Justice were willing to test new approaches and learn what works across very different settings. We will share reflections from both days once the Forum concludes. #ChristchurchCallActionForum #ChristchurchCall

What sets Suwali apart from other chatbots? In the words of Meedan Senior Engineer Dr. Kristina Sekrst, it answers "with its feet." In a recent post for the Suwali blog, Kristina explains: "The philosophy behind Suwali, which we are building at Meedan, is that of a library. A plain chatbot is the person who read everything once, years ago, and now answers from memory fluently and confidently, but sometimes tells you that Ryan Gosling is the mayor of Chicago. Suwali is not allowed to answer from memory at all – we only borrow its reasoning power. Asked a question, it has to walk to the shelves – a knowledge graph stocked with content curated by our partners – and pick up the actual books." If you want to learn more about our new tool -- or about LLMs in general -- Kristina's piece is an A+ primer. Give it a read: https://lnkd.in/e-yNZEgH

We’re excited to partner with Rede de Jornalistas Pretos, united by shared values and a commitment to community, trust and responsible AI innovation. Read our interview with Marcelle Chagas:
AI is often framed as a tool for inclusion. But it can just as easily decide who gets left out. Marcelle Chagas is building from that reality, using Suwali to develop AI grounded in the communities it is meant to serve. Her story, and what it tells us about who gets to define the future of AI: https://lnkd.in/geDnvhk8
