GitHub Copilot Dev Days Calgary: Developers Discover New Platform Capabilities

I spent my evening at Vancouver’s first GitHub Copilot Dev Days yesterday, and I’m definitely coming back to my projects with a few more Copilot tricks. It was refreshing to see a tool-agnostic approach. Whether you’re a VS Code purist, a Cursor convert, or living in JetBrains, the focus was purely on how we can actually build better, faster, and maybe even a little smarter. Huge thanks to the speakers/organizers for dropping some great knowledge: Ve Sharma: For a fascinating look at building non-deterministic CI gates. I also walked away with a huge appreciation for the GitHub Copilot pricing model, it is incredibly impressive how much value and scalability you get compared to using these models individually. Keyann Al-Kheder: For the masterclass in advanced Copilot workflows. I definitely pocketed a few more strategies to keep my AI-powered coding from going off the rails (great slideshow memes as well). Ray Kao: For breaking down Agentic Platform Engineering and answering all the questions people had. Beyond the talks, it was just great to hang out with the local Vancouver dev community. Until last week, GitHub Copilot was one model in one box. As of February 26th, every Copilot Business and Pro subscriber can assign @Claude or @Codex directly to GitHub issues and pull requests — no extra subscription. These aren't autocomplete suggestions. They're async agents that open draft PRs with full reasoning logs attached. That's a real workflow change. But the more interesting question is why GitHub shipped this now. Cursor crossed $500M ARR last year. Claude Code carved out a serious share of CLI-heavy workflows. Copilot's inline completions — the thing it was built around — stopped being a differentiator somewhere around 2025. Every IDE has that now. So GitHub's answer is: stop competing on the model, compete on the platform. Unified governance, shared agent context, and a native home inside the GitHub workflow you're already in. The bet is that where your code lives is where your agent should live too. Been thinking a lot about what actually moves the needle with GitHub Copilot. It's not the autocomplete. It's orchestration. Once you start treating agents as something you direct — chaining them together, managing context handoffs, letting agentic workflows absorb the scaffolding — the whole thing clicks differently. Prompt engineering and context engineering end up being the real craft. Not because they sound fancy, but because that's literally how you control what agents do and don't do. Still figuring a lot of it out. But that's the shift worth paying attention to.

With GitHub and GitHub Copilot, Open Source is entering a new era of inexpensive projects, where ideas will translate to actual projects and thriving communities in weeks, not years. Don't blink if you don't want to miss it.

Today we shipped agent activity in GitHub Issues and Projects, making agent work visible alongside human work: https://lnkd.in/d9i6YvFd Agents are no longer one off tools.
