St. Louis Cardinals: News, Scores, Stats, Headlines, Injury Updates & More

Nolan Arenado is off to a discouraging start to the 2024 MLB season -- a continuation of his slow Spring Training -- and there’s reason to believe the downward trend that began last season will continue.

Tommy Edman

STL Third Baseman #19

Tommy Edman (wrist) will be re-evaluated on Monday.

Edman received a positive update on Wednesday after undergoing an MRI to determine the status of his surgically-repaired right wrist. The 28-year-old center fielder is hoping additional imaging early next week will clear him to resume full baseball activities. It’s going to take him at least a couple weeks to fully ramp-up, which puts his season debut sometime next month, in a best-case scenario.
Sonny Gray

STL Starting Pitcher #54

Sonny Gray (hamstring) threw a 54-pitch simulated game on Wednesday.

It seems likely that Gray will make at least one minor league start next week before he’s ready to make his Cardinals debut. However, he expressed optimism to reporters that he’s ready to pitch in the majors his next time out. We’ll see. The 34-year-old righty has been on the shelf since spring training due to a mild right hamstring strain.
Willson Contreras

STL Catcher #40

Willson Conteras (hand) is not in the lineup for Thursday’s series opener against the Marlins.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol expressed concern Thursday that Contreras’ left hand might swell up enough to make catching difficult after being hit by a pitch earlier this week. He’ll get some time off to rest and recover with the hope that he’ll be ready to DH at some point in the next couple days. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. It’ll be Ivan Herrera and Pedro Pages handling the catching duties in his absence.
Brendan Donovan

STL Second Baseman #33

Brendan Donovan (elbow) is not in the lineup for Thursday’s series opener against the Marlins.

Donovan was hit by a pair of pitches during Wednesday’s contest against the Padres before leaving the game. The encouraging news for fantasy managers is that he doesn’t appear to have broken anything and is merely dealing with some bruising. He should be considered day-to-day for now.
Pedro Pages

STL Catcher #88

Cardinals recalled C Pedro Pagés from Triple-A Memphis.

Pagés will join the Cardinals’ 40-man roster after the team placed Matt Carpenter on the 10-day injured list. The 25-year-old backstop will add catching depth for the Cardinals while he’s on the roster.
Matt Carpenter

STL Third Baseman #14

Cardinals placed INF Matt Carpenter on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to April 2, with a right oblique strain.

The 38-year-old veteran will be sidelined for at least is the next ten days. Carpenter is 3-for-10 (.300 AVG) on the early season, but fantasy managers shouldn’t expect him to do much at the DH position when he returns to the active roster.
Victor Scott II

STL Center Fielder #11

Victor Scott II is in the leadoff spot in his first game at Busch Stadium against the Marlins on Thursday.

With Brendan Donovan and Willson Contreras out today, Scott be first up for the Cardinals. The 23-year-old is 3-for-25 (.120) in his first seven games with St. Louis with two of those hits being doubles. Here’s the Cardinals lineup: Victor Scott II CF, Paul Goldschmidt 1B, Nolan Arenado 3B, Ivan Herrera C, Nolan Gorman 2B, Jordan Walker RF, Alec Burleson DH, Masyn Winn SS, Michael Siani LF, Lance Lynn SP.
Zack Thompson

STL Relief Pitcher #57

Zack Thompson yielded three runs in five innings Wednesday in a loss to the Padres.

Thompson averaged just 90 mph with his fastball today, which isn’t great. He still wasn’t hit particularly hard, but he walked four and gave up a homer to Kyle Higashioka. Thompson has a 6.97 ERA in two starts. Expectations were that he would have made the Cardinals as a swingman if Sonny Gray were healthy to start the year, but with the way he’s performed thus far, he might be sent down when Gray is activated.
Jordan Walker

STL Right Fielder #18

Jordan Walker was lifted for a pinch-hitter after grounding into a double play and striking out twice in his three at-bats Wednesday against the Padres.

Games don’t get much more discouraging than that. Walker’s 22 plate appearances have seen him strike out eight times and hit eight grounders while going 4-for-19. His exit velocity numbers aren’t bad, but the grounders and medium-depth flies don’t produce many hits. We’re still optimistic about Walker for the long run, but it wouldn’t be totally stunning if, for the second year in a row, he again faces an early demotion as a result of the Cardinals as a whole being a disappointment.
Brendan Donovan

STL Second Baseman #33

Brendan Donovan was removed from Wednesday’s showdown against the Padres after being hit by a pitch on his elbow.

Donovan remained in the game to run the bases for himself, but was replaced when the Cardinals took the field the next inning. He’ll presumably head for X-rays just to make sure that everything checks out structurally. Expect the Cardinals to provide an update on his status once that imaging is done.
